It was mostly about improving race pace while improving upon the car's strength further. Updates that will directly attack the big weaknesses might not come until much later this season or even next year.

Well if McLaren did invite him they made it political. Not getting into pro or against, but bringing controversial political figure as guest is really not a smart move (to put it as mildly as I can).

It's not really a RedBull style sidepod. It's more inspired by the W14 mid-wing if anything else. And that car seemingly had plenty of nifty aerodynamic features since RBR also have been inspired by it.

As for McLaren, the updated sidepods seem like a clear development evolution of their initial spec. Not really inspired by anything they might have seen from the competition this year. Perhaps the second upgrade package will see more "borrowed" features.

I think this upgrade is trying to start tackle the issue, I think they know if it a hard one to tackle and this is why some bits have been delayed. I think they just don't want to get the fans hopes up.
