Leclerc plan will probably a huge undercut in the second stint as he will have an additional new medium tyre to go to the end. The others will have to extend the second stint in order to use the soft for the third stint. He can gain a lot of time in these laps, provided he is in free air obviously.

This strategy on paper looks quite good. Unfortunately, the track improving massively completely screwed him.

so you're expecting the others to go for S-M-S?

I was thinking Leclerc's biggest advantage would be that he doesn't need to run the hards, but well, yeah... maybe no one will.

I doubt the others will use it. Last year it was a disaster.

I think he screwed himself a little by going out early, no? Since it was his decision.

The race strategy is fine, it's the qualifying strategy that doesn't make sense. Good on him for owning up to it though.

Yeah i mean going out early in general doesn't have a massive penalty. This time it was because of the clouds.

Yea, doubt the hards are going to get used, Ham said in free practice that it was a bad tire and last year the ones who went for the hards on lap 37 (Russell and Sainz) eventually got passed by their team mates who stuck it out on the mediums for 7 more laps and went to the softs

In order to be actually good i think the track temp needs to be like 90 degrees

What did I miss? Why didn't Leclerc have another set of softs in Q3, while Hamilton did? It's not like Leclerc had struggled in Q1 or Q2.

This easily cost him several positions. This is baffling to me.

He had one less set of softs going into qualifying because he wanted to keep two mediums instead of two softs.

He said in one of his interviews that he knew he'd be losing grid positions because of this but they didn't expect track evo to be that strong. It sounded like he was expecting a third row even with his one Q3 lap.

Still, he seems happy with his choice, sooo... #-o

That medium can make a big difference in the last stint. He can push harder if others have to be on used softs.
For Sure!!

So Hamilton did both his Q3 laps on fresh set of softs?
Leclerc was three tenths up on Hamilton's time from first run on the only comparable runs.

Hope they have talked enough how to approach the race. Can't lose time behind a slow car even if it's the same team if one is to maximise the results in a close race like this.

Thank you. Hopefully Leclerc will be able to put both the new mediums to good use.

Start on softs to try and jump Kimi 🤞

Seemed to be around 2 tenths off the McLaren, likely better than the Mercedes and on par with the Red Bull
