It's the ideas. Simple. You don't get ideas or a philosophy for a car and how all the components will work together from throwing --- into CFD. Newey has stated in the past that quite often he'll have an idea when he's sitting around in the evening or something.
The thing I like about Newey and is the key to his success though is that he always gets to the lowest common denominator of what's required. This season is a good example. Before winter testing everyone assumed you would strap the largest diffuser on to your car as possible and everyone was talking about loopholes in the regulations so they could get various holes into it to produce more downforce. Newey looked at the situation and realised that a large diffuser that was 95% efficient could always be beaten by a slightly smaller and more efficient diffuser, and he's never been the sort of engineer to waste time getting fixated on one component.
At Barcelona you could hear the engineers of all the other teams doing their Spinal Tap impressions "But.........our diffuser is bigger"
