An old fart can run 3rd in an f1 field full of young studs and that too with 4th quickest car! LoL then the young hotshots must be bullsj!t
They're all scared to pass him because of his reputation of driving "agressively"!

(I'm just kidding around. Lighten up y'all!)

I got completely confused. Is Mercedes' system passive or not? I thought it worked as following: the DRS opens up some holes, air is suck thorugh them into various channels, then the air is directed back to the nose cone via thin channels and the air quits onto the flaps which stalls it.

In this sense the system is activated by the DRS and so by the driver. Am I wrong?

Don't forget the FIA live in a world where a weight suspended by a couple of springs inside the car and completely away from the air flow is a moveable aerodynamic device. In this crazy world the movement of the DRS flap does not count as an active device and so the Mercedes system is deemed to be passive.

The DRS system is a specifically approved driver actuated aero device. Nothing in the description of the DRS system prevents holes in the end plates. Holes in the endplates are also not banned elsewhere in the rules as there are other holes in everybody's endplates. Also, it is unproven that this system affects the front wing, although it would probably be legal if it did.
The Merc system is just a part of their DRS system. It only works for a couple of seconds on some laps. It is probably more effective for qualifying I think.

You obviously don't race cars. FYI, there's a very good chance you'll go into a spin if you hit a sharp turn in neutral. That's why Michael went straight. But then again... I'm arguing with someone who thinks he knows more about car control than Michael Schumacher... so I doubt my own info counts for much.

Yes. He noticed the gearbox was toast and rather than try and make the turn in nuetral he clearly went the path of least resistance. Any suggestion otherwise is rediculous.

Yer, when the car is out of gear you have far, far less control. You can't really be sure what's going to happen.

Been a while since I drove a full stick shift manual (which I actually miss!) but I do remember once upon a time that I was told to only ever pull the shifter out of gear and into neutral in emergencies; as it could cause a loss of traction.

What's funny/sad is that you take what Michael said as absolute truth.

Guys thats normal physics...^^

I'm driving a normal BMW, rear wheel drive, manual shift.
If you have lets say a speed of 100Km/h and are going into a corner you normally let the gear in, cause if you press the clutch/go to neutral, then you have no motorbrake and its more likely that you might get oversteer.

Same thing goes if you try to force a lower gear mid-corner, rear wheels are blocked, you spin, that could easily happen when MSC had a broken gearbox.
