McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes (pre-launch speculation)

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's against the regulations i think. The side impact may be a concern.

About the wide air intakes. The radiators are still conventional. The side pod is simply 700m wide on either side. The undercut is still prensent, as well as a turning vane along the undercut. Teams haven't been using maximum width lately.

My sidepod design is the complete opposite obviously, but since Mclaren are evolving and not revolving, and thestig is saying that there are no U or L pods.
Chances are their sidepods could look the one i photoshopped.

Concerning the lamborghin design, that is a lot of lift creation. Slant surfaces should be avoided on side pods. It's an observation i made in CFD. Notice we see a lot of vertical flanks on modern F1 cars, especially from redbull.
For Sure!!

Be careful of what you say, as the person your in contact in could loose his job (if he works at mclaren) everyone remember Gooney?
Dont worry I was here throughout the Gooney affair. Think my 2nd hand little snippet is a little different to him showing photographs of himself at the MTC to prove it was him trying to give away a development they had been working on for nearly 2 years.

i thought the whole point of the L pods was to get more clean air to the beam wing. isn't having the L pods the opposite way around blocking that air?

No more than it would on another car.
The exhaust are there know so the height is needed. There is an entrainment of the air from the sides now.

So the crash structure has to be in the high part of L shape then?

I agree that is the problem! It isnt that easy fix with some sort crash frame...

Yes that is the main issue of l pods, periscoped exhaus... And unconventional conventional design will be clever solution...

But if i m righ thi solution will be still a lit bit dragy, like more invard normal tear drop side pods? But on the another hand thus design retain the last years downforce level (upper pretty unchanged low preassure)... So there are +/- so are they to make kompromise and take risk?

Less draggy than a regular side pod since the opening is much smaller. You see with this design the engine intakes are in the central part of the sidepod openings..this is the finished version. No engine intake in the Roll Blade.

Radiator layout: what about 2 or 3 layers of radiators?
Instead of an inlet that gets bigger to higher static pressure and lower speed, a msall channel with much less area increase, and 3 radiators of 1/3 of the normal size back to back in it.
Higher drag (much higher?) but you operate with a much smaller mass flow rate to which you give more energy density -> meredith effect.

Also opens different scenarios for packaging

Shelly - wasn't that the path that the W02 took on?
