So basically what you are saying is that they fluked onto a quick car design and since they fluked onto it, they don't know why it's quick leading to the car being slow at the moment.

Sounds to me like you're describing Brawn GP.

But seriously, I suspect that their simulations have provided a set of data that isn't being seen on the track. This would imply that yes, they do have a car that they think is capable, but the differential between simulation and real work is too great for them to dial it in at this time.

I don't for one minute believe that McLaren have taken what they believed to be a "bad" car into the 2011 season.

It would be interesting to see how there simulation data compares to the real world data.

Everything I've read from the team and drivers indicates that the car performs as expected, but that they're just a bit slow, either through not having enough time on track to dial it in or from having a bit less downforce than the others. Both of those things can be fixed - there's nothing that indicates to me that they've got a 19 or 24 on their hands.

Comments like Brundle's about the car being a wreck are BS, and the drivers have said exactly that. My prediction is that the car is exactly where it was at the start of last year - about a second down from RB and a half second off Ferrari. They might look worse than they did last year, if some of the teams like Merc or Renault have closed the gap.

I think it will be a fun year, with some really aggressive development from the team. I love the concept of the car, and love the fact that we've actually got one team who will go beyond conventional designs. It even has a different aesthetic, low and mean and almost steampunk in appearance. I think I'm going to love this season no matter what; and if they end up winning, then that's just icing on the cake.

the MP26 is again a different car to mainstream F1 which is really showing this team has ambition and balls.

Agreed. I like the car. Some say it's ugly but then that's a subjective thing.

I wonder how many of those who idolise the RB7 will still be with them when the inevitable "fall from grace" occurs. McLaren can and will get back to title winning ways as will Ferrari. Who else manages it will be interesting to watch over the next year or two...

What Lewis can say to the press about this years car is driven by sponsorship. What Brundle can say about it is not. Its that simple. I've never thought Brundle biased against Mclaren so when he says it looks horrible on track im afraid thats probably correct. Obviously Mclaren will do there upmost to change that. And who knows when it will look smooth in to the corners. The bottom line is that since the FIA changed the rules and took away endless wind tunnel testing and track time McLaren have been on the back foot. Will they catch up before Hamilton throws in the towel? who knows.

Obviously there is still a HUGE gap between simulator and real world.

Lewis should just get on with his driving and stop pretending to be some kind of inspirational leader or PR machine for Mclaren.

Honestly, I don't see what the point of comparing the the MP4-26 to 09's car.

"That doesn't mean it won't become a World Championship-winning car," the 26-year-old said.

"They (Brundle, Coulthard and Jordan) don't drive it so they don't know exactly how it is. I wouldn't agree with what he (Brundle) says.

"The car feels better than last year's car. It isn't as fast as others are, but two years ago we were two or three seconds off the pace and now we are maybe a second.

"We definitely have the strength within the team to catch up."

He's right. He's the one driving the car and talking to the engineers.
Brundle will say anything to sensationalize.
For Sure!!

Well, considering that nothing much else has been said by McLaren other than Whitmarsh sniffing the other day, I would say that at least he's doing a job keeping the mood upbeat.

Contrast to miserable JB, who in interviews looks at the floor a lot and barely has anything positive to say. Sure, it might be closer to the truth, but don't knock Hamilton for having a positive attitude.

I have seen Button do this, and I have seen Ross Brawn do the very same thing.

There are a number of reasons why JB might do this, not least perhaps because he was told to do so by the team to keep mugs like us, and the rival teams guessing, but equally he might simply be being honest, something he might have learnt from Ross Brawn, who many times over the last few seasons has given surprisingly honest information during pre-race interviews.

I have nothing against McLaren!

All I want to ask is why they change their schedule and let out Thursday and run on Saturday (was it announced on Monday. when did they decide it?) when it is quite sure that there will be the strong chance of rain on Saturday?

Not so smart in my opinion. Couldnt they change their schedule back on Wednesday anymore due to some contract, or what? :?

I think sometimes some people are exagerating how important testing is, remember every race is a test, so after the first race then it's on. Look at HRT, they will still be there, with a car, actually racing, or maybe getting in the way!

Also, the drivers are always going to be unhappy if they are not top of anything they do, especially in the testing times. That's why they appear to be slightly pessimistic, they want to be clearly on top no matter if they are not running at the optimum performance of the car.

Just take a step back and don't buy into the sensationalist headlines on other websites.
Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.
