So long as the Stroll signing helps Williams get the extra cash they need to develop back into a top team, and Stroll develops as a driver unlike Crashinardo then I'm not fussed. It's been far too long since drivers were offering too drive for Williams (Senna) for free because they were the team to be in. I mean we couldn't even entice Button for one last hurrah!

Anyway, Bottas really is the key here for Stroll, he has to be close to Bottas and at least line ball by the end of next year to be considered a very good talent really. And in '18 he should be showing Bottas a clean pair of heels. Otherwise, he is likely to be another Hulk; fast with potential, but never quite shining through as well as a driver like a Riciardo, Hamilton, Raikkonen or Alonso.

Stroll ‘has not learned to suffer yet’ - Villeneuve

By Julien Billiotte, 04/11/2016 at 16:30

1997 Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve says he is eager to see how new Williams driver Lance Stroll fares under adversity.

The 18-year-old was confirmed alongside Valtteri Bottas for 2017 on Thursday and will graduate to F1 straight from Formula 3 after dominating this year’s European championship. Stroll will also succeed Villeneuve as the latest Canadian to compete in the top flight.

“Winning the F3 championship like he did may not translate at the next level,” the 11-time grand prix winner told Le Journal de Montreal. “There are so many drivers who had starred in F3 but did not pan out in the end.

“Incidentally, others never shone in the feeder series before becoming great in F1. Each case is unique.”

Stroll’s rise through the junior categories has been facilitated by his father Lawrence’s immense wealth. The teenager was quick to admit ‘I come from money’ but also insisted he earned his seat through results.

“It will be interesting to see how Lance will evolve psychologically in F1,” Villeneuve added. “He will no longer be protected by his father, he will be more or less on his own.

“He is very quick and talented but he has not learned to suffer yet. I’m eager to see how he reacts under duress. If he overcomes it, like all great champions do, then the sky is the limit for him

“Lance has fought hard to win races but he has not toiled to survive in motor racing. He is not a finished product yet and needs to learn more but that’s only normal.”

I don't have anything new to add about Stroll himself. It will be very interesting to watch. If he is a non-pay driver by start of 2019 then he has cred.

If you get into F1 with money it is traditionally very difficult to become a non-pay driver. The pay-reputation seems to follow you more strongly than any good results.

Bottas staying on for 2017 is great for all Williams fans because he is a pretty quick and very reliable yardstick to measure Stroll by. If Bottas didn't exist someone would have to invent him.

WILLIAMS ENTERS TECHNICAL PARTNERSHIP WITH DICASTAL

09 NOV 2016

Williams is pleased to announce a new partnership with Dicastal, a leading global manufacturer of automotive wheels and part of the Citic Group.

In its technical partnership with Williams, Dicastal’s wheels will go through vigorous R&D with WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING before on track product testing begins in 2017.

After 28 years of development, Dicastal has become the world’s leading manufacturer of aluminium wheels, producing high quality, lightweight wheels with innovation, high performance and engineering excellence at its core. Furthermore, the technical relationship could lead to additional partnerships through Williams Advanced Engineering, the engineering services and technology division of Williams, where energy efficient performance is of the utmost importance.

Commenting on the partnership, Nelson Wang, Chief Executive Officer of Dicastal said; “Our team members are excited to partner with Williams. The spirit of Formula One will inspire us to become more competitive, innovative and self-challenging. Williams’ technologies in racing will help us to develop products with higher performance for our customers.”

Claire Williams, Deputy Team Principal and Commercial Director of Williams, added; “Here at Williams, we are always looking for the slightest advantage to edge out the competition, and light weighting is fundamental to that. As an organisation, Dicastal’s dedication to engineering excellence perfectly matches our own and we look forward to working together.”

Very important partenership.
Williams Racing will have custom wheels (made at request of the design team and racing team) starting for with next season.

Maybe dumb question, but do Williams not already use custom wheels? So their current wheels are the off-the-shelf design of the current supplier?

Mercedes has for sure custom wheels :)

I would say Williams has off-the-shelf wheels with some modification. A guess from my part (from the pictures I have seen).

This year has showed that: how important are the custom wheels to keep types in the right temperature range.
