Yes, in 2005 that McLaren, and especially its Mercedes engines, were as unreliable as they had been for years previously. Hakkinen retired with problems - a lot in 2001. Coulthard retired with problems. Montoya retired with problems. There is nothing that you can pin on any one of those drivers as to what they had done wrong. The Ferrari that he then drove was somewhat more reliable and this melted away.
Also, the F60 wasn't a good car to drive, but he drove it like a mad; drenching every ounce of performance from it every time there was an outing.
I don't know where you get that from. When you're in a bad car then you have to get as much as you can out of it and adjust accordingly. That doesn't mean that he drove like that all the time, and China 2007 proved otherwise.
