That side is the intercooler radior I think so they could be simulating a worst case scenario where inlet temps are too hot how the engine reacts.
Or may be something else as Sauber did that too, or just coincidence? - http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... 15#p623451

Im probably over simplifying it a bit too much, but in karting we tape off radiators so that engines reach temperature and stay there during colder events.

Maybe it is cooler than expected? Maybe they are simulating hotter environments (as has been mentioned)? Maybe they actually plan to reduce inlet size and want to see how much is reasonable?

I think its just testing reliability of the new engines.
Its winter in Europe, and summer in Australia, Sepang, China etc where temps can get over 30 degrees C(Hell, Aus can hit 35-40C).

Running in 5-10degree C temps with radiators wide open gives a false indication on the reliability you can expect from the engine. So the engine temps need to be pushed up as much as possible to simulate those conditions and test the limit.
Its no use having great reliability in Spain, and get to Australia, turn up the engine, its 30C and your engine blows up...

And I'm pretty sure most teams will be testing it in this way at some stage. None of them are stupid enough not to do running like this. Wont be just Merc and Sauber.

Only today I realized that Malaysian GP moved from March to Oct; first time ever. It will not be as hot as this month.
Previously, October has always been for MotoGP race. Expect wet race then.

This is great, a wet race will be always better though wet in Malaysia means a red flag.

I think it is almost imposible to estimate the difference between both teams because Ferrari is on an earlier stage of development of its car. I guess, anyway, that the gap will be greater in Melbourne but it will be reduced if this new design shows the potential that theoretically has.

Not really. October is always transitional month before year-end monsoon; wet race highly possible.

Expect to see a soft tyre run from Kimi today, given it's his last day. Should be interesting- I expect low 23s.

F1today's live timing features max and average speed as well for those who are interested, I believe this is new.

Interesting. I thought it would look worse on the cars than it does. I really don't mind this.
Wonder if its not maybe a bit distracting?

Why Ferrari test it so early?

Yuck!!!

Personally I'd prefer they just went the whole hog and did a jet fighter style canopy like this design below:
