2024 car comparison thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's old but it's still good

Hmm, if you look at it this way, most of the cuts are straight shapes, but the faster RB20 has that cut shape that continues from the RB18.
Actually a straight shape would be better, but since wind tunnel time is limited, is it possible to develop it with the tested shape?

?
One interesting thing is, most cars are re-converging to the thin sidepod edge introduced last year's by I think Merc and AT, compared to the bluff sidepod sidewall in the beginning of this reg cycle (RB18, F1-75).

Now, each of the top 3 teams races with the overbite inlet. Coincidence? I don't think so.

I don't know how accurate these are and how much they matter in practice, but it's interesting to see that Red Bull roll up a comparatively massive vortex and many smaller ones, while the other teams have consistently sized vortices.

What is your conclusion?

7 teams are on the wrong path.

The only one with equal sized vortexes in the drawing is Mercedes though.

Everyone else is dealing with 2-3 big ones and many small ones, but that’s an obvious simplistic view of what air does there as it misses on the context where those flows exist.

that may just be the biggest pile of nonsense I've ever seen masquerading as an aerodynamic explanation       .

RB diffuser throat(?) seems a lot lower/closer to the ground than I expected, compared to Ferrari.

Now this is actually interesting. I've been wondering for a while what major differences there were between the diffusers as a lot of them look so similar.

Nice illustration of fluid dynamic here :D

The depth of the displacement "decay" visible here after initial displacement by the bow, just how far down it wants to go, it's frequency in length and recovery plane at the rear of the craft all intrigue me.

Also a "hot bulb" ignition engine .... a bit like current F1 combustion method too
