wing fences

What do those vertical fences (often seen on rear wings, such as the Subaru WRCar but also on some f1 cars last year) do for airflow? I thought that they were banned?

(see the technical reviews on http://www.f1.com for spain last year)

They were banned last year....during the season, can't remember after which GP but probably it was after or during the Spanish GP.

The main idea....turbulant airflow cirulates in 3 axis....with those fences you reduce the circulation in one of them. Another thing is it reduces the interaction of diferent areas ontop of the wing that are at diferent pressures...reducing a kind of "lateral" movement of the airflow ontop of the wing...
