I'm not disagreeing with you in principle, however it's worth pointing out that Mercedes spent their 7 tokens solely on the ice at Monza and made a measurable gain.

And if Mercedes were forced to use say... 5 of those 7, do you think the gains would be 5/7th's the gain they had?
You are missing the point, Renault spent 9 tokens on their PU vs Mercedes 7 for theirs. As far as we can tell the 9 tokens have delivered a regression in performance of the Renault PU.
But then you don't know what they've changed, for example are the tokens used now to allow for further development next year when more tokens are available? Conceivable.

Certainly, if the upgrade required a new turbo to function as intended, then I would imagine that once run in that configuration, improvements would be seen. Surely the dyno would be enough to know what the difference would be! Running it Brazil is proved the ICE changes are reliable enough at least. RBR rushing to complain publicly is probably oar for the course too, one suspects...

Given that Ferrari made huge strides last winter, it's far from impossible to expect Renault to at least close the gap.

You only need to see the interviews with Danny Ric to see they were'nt expecting to go backwards in performance - especially when you compare the new PU vs a 2 race weekend old unit in Kyvat's car.

Renault admited the upgrade failed to deliver too

“We tried out the new ICE upgrades in Daniel Ricciardo’s car. The engine ran reliably, but unfortunately it did not deliver the expected improvements in performance,” said Taffin.

“All the same, the reliable running ensured we gathered a lot of data to analyse how we can move forward to the final race of the year and going into the winter.”

Now that TAG has becomed RB sponsor seems probable that the rumors about a separated engine development based on the Renault ICE become reality in a revamp of the old "TAG Porsche" redirected as "TAG Renault" engine after the VW crisis.

I wouldn't bet my money on it. The TAG Group and TAG Heuer are not the same business anymore. TAG Heuer is part of the LVMH Group now and TAG owner Mansour Ojjeh is still McLaren Shareholder.

I believe this particular "TAG" only creates watches.

Probably they will dump CASIO, or CASIO will go to Mclaren to form a Japanese connection with HONDA.

Maybe they need to hang on to Casio. They definitely can use the calculators to better calculate the horsepower from the engine  . #Joke

Full annoucement at Abu Dhabi, or after it so they don't have to go through the crappy press conferences saying "Yes, we said Renault were crap but we're still using them in 2016"

There is a crazy rumor coming from Salzburg and Tokyo!

There will be a Honda PU in the back of the 2016 RB.

What I heard money talks.....Ron Dennis needs money and RB(needs PU),Mr E(needs RB in the field) and Honda(needs another team for more testing) has alot of money to help him.
