Oh and BTW, there was a Boolean plugin for Sketchup version 8 that gave the Pro tools to the free version.

Its pretty easy to get hold of the Pro version BTW.

I find the Intersect tool does the job perfectly fine.

Then you go to the CoP Spreadsheet Julien did before OCCFD, when we were using the Khamsin plugin, and compy and paste the data into it.
If you havent got it, it was shared a few pages ago IIRC or there is this link from my Google Drive. Save it so you can edit it. I copied and pasted the cells so I could compare data side by side.

thanks for showing this and the spreadsheet.
if i have done everything correct then the results are saying that i have taken off around 8 seconds a lap round Nurburgring =D> which sounds like a lot but it only brings me up one place #-o but if i can sort the cooling issues out it brings me to the back of the pack of those with 100% power.

having trouble running the tests of the 2 cars with and without the vortex cell in the diffuser one is running now but the other is running into divergence issues and don't know why... (there shouldn't be any issue running both tests at the same time on the same PC??)

As a software engineer myself I wouldn't want my software to be pirated (even though you need a £200k system to run it on) so I don't pirate other peoples.

I installed OpenSCAD and had a play around. It seems pretty simplistic to do boolean operations on solids and demos seem to allow for complex items. Haven't seen if you can create 2D shapes for extrusion and paths for ducting.

Those things described are easy to do with FreeCAD. You just do not not how. And learning it is not so easy. I did it by looking at a few tutorials on youtube and then trying on a larger project I did for a friend. Since then I am happy with FreeCAD but I would not use it for designing a KVRC car. For this I use Blender. Again not that easy to learn but there are much better tutorials on youtube and many of them. After you have a hang of it, it is very good to create crazy shapes which then even have a very nice stl quality. And that is always good for CFD or 3D printing. Maybe in a week or two I will have some time to create a small tutorial.

Who said anything about pirating? The store plugin from Sketchucation will allow you to effectively build Sketchup Pro from the free version.

Super simple and no manual dragging around of parts. Everything with numeric values. Took two minutes (30 s FreeCAD, 90s to create the gif).

Super simple in Sketchup too.

Probably super simple in everything. But how do we turn this into a car now?

Export 2d for each stage then used a gift generating website.

I had the Jordan diffuser step on a car last season.

Are you sure this sketch is accurate?
I think F1 teams actually used similar shapes but with the radius on the other edge, the one at the end of the flat horizontal portion. However, purpose was not to create a cavity, but to move the diffuser starting point as much forward as possible.
Indeed, the regulation defined the floor limits, where it had to be entirely flat and horizontal (in car referential), with the possibility to curve the periphery upward with a maximum radius of 50 mm (not fully sure of this dimension, it might have been a bit different). So, instead of just applying a R50 tangentially to the diffuser slope (blue sketch), they would apply a full quarter circle as per red sketch. This would involve this small cavity between the radius and the diffuser, which has no purpose in itself, but if it had any downside, it was probably advantageously balanced by the gain coming with the diffuser starting more forward.

With Formula 1 aerodynamics being so over-regulated, one must always wonder if a shape is there because it has an actual aerodynamic purpose on its own, or if it is just a consequence / side-effect of engineers trying to achieve something else while reading the rules with a different angle. It highlights how pointless it is trying to understand F1 aerodynamics looking at the bodywork without a good knowledge of the regulation.

Sorry, nothing to report yet. It sounds like Julien isn't back up to speed yet.

just in the interest of sharing and for those that are curious I have posted some info and results on the 'vortex cell' in the diffuser.
