No that was just the Date when the FIA could Force a PU manufacturer to supply a Team that is currently without a PU. If a Team looks for an Engine by itself and signs a contract they can change their PU supplier anytime they want.
Thanks Thunders, so the PU change could happen. :?
Yes it can, but I think that if it happens, it will not be mid-season with some kind of B-spec car as some speculations are circulating.

On the other hand, I know understand Alonso's ''ultimatum'' for Mclaren to win by September, it means get the Merc PU back in that car
Re-Branded Mercedes PU is most likely solution for 2018....but Mclaren will give Honda one more chance whit the update.
Thats how the rumor goes.

Yes, I think that McLaren and Alonso will wait and see how the updated PU work. If they improvement is clear and marks a clear path for further improvemente, Honda will remain there. If not, Mercedes will be back in 2018, no sooner.

A re-branded PU could be an interesting solution.

You got to think that's a possibility just by Toto saying "no comment" on a question if "McLaren could move to Merc" instead of a flat out no.

The embarrassment for Honda would be hard. These first 7 races have had to be tough as well.

What did it say?
Two stroke: a little more than half the power, twice as often.

Why not keep the Mercedes name on the engine? It's not like they slagged off Mercedes.

Isn't that a way to get closer to works budget from a non works situation?

Rebrand the PU for $$

The accounts of it is guess work on my part, but I think if the engine is rebranded to company X, then company X has to pay McLaren who in turn has to pay more for the engine. So if this is how it works, the sponsor, company X is the one who shoulders the bulk of the bill. McLaren only have one sponsor with that sort of cash laying around ; -)

Yup.. Only honda can afford to rebadge.. And I know Mercedes wont allow that to happen for regular "rebranding money"

I might be wrong, but I'd think Honda would rather burn down their HQ than put their badge on a german engine.

The whole "they will wait to see what the next Honda upgrade brings" is a smoke screen. Zac has already said they (Honda) are lost and Alonso says they will have to bring a winning engine to convince him. It's obvious they know Honda won't deliver the goods and are just posturing until the split is announced. They have no time to wait for Honda now. It's over, they are thinking about next years car and how they can get the Mercedes intergrated as early as possible.

If I were Hasegawa position, I would push harder to produce better engine than when I do that I would declare after a few race Sauber as work team and broke mclaren deal. Of course Japannese culture is different. But this is what I do if I were no matter how much it cost.

I feel it might already be to late for honda but they done some impressive engineering in the past so who knows.

if honda somehow get a competitive engine i can already hear alonso on the team radio,

Alonso "Something wrong with engine"
Engineer "we looking into it , whats wrong?"
Alonso "engine has power"
:D

Just to keep expectations in check (if anyone should still have some), Honda are still only targeting Merc 2016 level.......
