Well, I guess that answers what was going on with the deflectors - weren't working properly because of flex/vibration.

Incredible difference for being the same car, but must surely fit within the same philosophy for the rest of it?

The new wing almost harkens back to the RB12 wing with it's concentration of element tips low down.

So they were removing those parts because they weren't secure enough.

Each sidepod houses an intercooler for the turbocharger, then there is only space for a smaller water radiator. The roll hoop inlet, while small and rounded is the inlet for the rest of the cars cooling and breathing needs. The inlet splits horizontally internally into three, the upper inlet feeds a large water radiator for the hybrid system mounted behind the engine, the middle inlet feeds the engine’s airbox and the lower inlet splits left and right to duct air to the oil coolers mounted either side of the engine. This places a lot of weight high up over the engine and makes access to the engine being surrounded by coolers somewhat tricky. It has to be the case that the aero benefit of the shaped sidepods pays in, performance for the losses in Centre of Gravity height and slightly bulkier top bodywork.

The rake is incredible! You can just see the tip of it sticking out behind the top of the body  :)

So look, there are 3 covered over holes at the rearmost ends of the halo (so we will see a surprise aero extension last day of testing or come australia possibly) and what are these elongated square covers on top of the upper sidepot wing for, maybe also for another aero fairing?

These are just the covered mounting holes of the halo structure... nevertheless, they might double up as fairing/winglet fixation points, but that's pure speculation.

I think those are just the fixing point covers for the rear of the halo. You can see them covered [uncovered on one Merc shot] on other cars in the same spot, although Ferrari, McLaren and Merc seem to have gone with just one panel

Probably a facility to add outlet grilles for hot weather races. The radiators are just below those panels.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

I think sieper is referring to the taped patches on the side wings which are well ahead of the intakes.

Patches to cover screws? Great photo, lowing the natural flow called rain :D

Holy crap, finally had the epiphany for this change in trailing edge height of top side pod wing. It is used as a slot in just a small piece of contact with actual side pod to create low pressure zone, thus pulling the air coming over the actual inlet/wing towards the cockpit outboard and letting it go down more quickly. A small price in lift to lessen the overall lift over the side pod. SF70-H had this feature from the start, and RB13 was given a wider flap over the side pod inlet during the season.

Image

To be fair, teams have been actually doing this for a while (though much more outboard on the side pod), glad to have finally understood it.
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Indeed, the 3 dimples to the rear of the halo are indeed the screw covers, halo standard parts, Thanks for those pics. The end of the wings are detachable (interchangeable) so indeed likely with those patches the locking mechanism for that is covered.
