hope next year they go back to a normal suspension that works

That picture explains a lot. It is just an aerodynamic fairing over an essentially metal part.

That part looks pretty scary by the way.

From this photo, the upper arm till the joint with the pull rod remained in tact.
The Metal Rinka arm on the upright seems to hung stil there, so perhaps it is the attachment of the link arm to the upright that is broken.

But what about the advantages (if it works), or if they get it to work for 2019 ?

Adrian Newey said it was most innovative 2018 design if it works. Thus - does it work ?

By regulation the uprights have to be Aluminium, maybe the point of failure is where the upright bolts up to the upper wishbone.

I've said this several times: Front wing slots, wing pillar slots, S-duct, their rear suspension (the attachment point on the wishbone is pretty much the same as Ferrari's, I'm not sure which came first), and now their rear wing endplates. Everyone's copying McLaren all the time, so they are able to come up with good ideas. It's just that they're probably offset by equally poor features of the car.

The angle of the pull rod is pretty much the same as Red Bull's
Yet both Ferrari and Red Bull are two of the top three teams on the championship.

State here why you know that McLaren's rear suspension is the cause of their lack of performance and I'll record a video of me eating my favourite pair of shoes.

Why in 2018 people keep making assumptions of things they don't understand is beyond me.

The thing is that anyone can come up with a good idea. The difference is in whether or not you actually understand what you are doing. And I don't think McLaren has any clue on what they are actually doing.

Diego - multiplying a poor leverage by a poor attachment angle makes it much, much worse, not the same ;)

The forces there from the combination compared to either solution by itself will be much higher, as will friction and stiction in the suspension.
Even with that chunky section of upper arm it's still snapped off...
