Something else to remember about fp2 times, is that if qualifying is rained out Sunday morning, fp2 times will set the grid.

For all those saying Ferrari didn't have their engines turned up, Leclerc's comments sure don't make it sound that way.

Doesn't really tell that they had their engines turned up. What we know for now is that Mercedes had less fuel and a higher engine mode than they normally would have on a Friday, according to Shovlin.

If for some reason sunday qualifying doesn't start (car damage danger, driver exhaustion), then VT2 times will be used for the grid. That would mean Merc did a smart move there.

That said,
let's take the scenario of a canceled Qually.

Normally, cars will be under parc fermé conditions after Qually, right? and they are mandated to use the tire compound they set their lap in (top 10) right?
But, since VT2 is not an 'official' qually setting, would that mean that the drivers can pick whatever tires for the sunday GP start?

that is concidering it will be dry offcourse.
Or are they mandated to start their VT2 compounds?

As I and others mentioned, if qualifying is canceled Sunday morning because of the hurricane, then the grid will be set by FP2 times. Thus, It seems extremely silly that Ferrari would not go as fast as they could in FP2.

If FP2 does end up setting the order, Then Ferrari starts 4th and 5th.

As qualifying has been delayed to Sunday due to the threat from Super Typhoon Hagibis, and with the possibility of further rain on Sunday morning disrupting that session, the stewards announced the fastest times from second practice could be used to determine the grid

Seems like Bottas has less drag than Hamilton, way faster top speed in the non-drs areas.
I wonder if they converge...

Bottas also slightly faster than Leclerc heading into 130R, but that could(emphasis on could before people come here shooting me) be down to Ferrari having an old engine on the car.

The forecast is for strong winds all Sunday, gusts over 70kph blowing NorthEast so any car with unstable yaw during turning will be blown away by the time they finish the corners. Prime candidates are: RedBull, Ferrari, Alfa.
Expect multiple safety cars and crashes, could be good hunting ground for Williams to score multiple points.

There is no certainty that qualifying will be canceled and the teams didn’t know that Qualy was going to be on Sunday until after FP1... Would be very surprising if the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari run their race engines and gearboxes in FP1 and FP2, since they need to make sure that they make it to the last race without penalties... Same applies to the rest of the teams... If the question is losing a place or 2 in the starting grid because of the potential of not having qualifying or risk starting from the back in the final races of the season, it would be reasonable for the teams to show the 2nd option.
