Sir Frank Williams obituary: A Formula 1 icon & one of greatest team owners

By Andrew Benson
Chief F1 writer
Williams did not so much love F1 as was consumed by it. Although his health prevented his active involvement in the team for the last few years, he literally lived in the factory. The team he set up was his life - as it always had been.

A measure of his devotion to the sport was that he was prepared to put his own comfort second to the success of his team. When he faced a decision some years ago between building a wind tunnel that would help make the cars go faster and keeping the private plane that allowed him to attend the farthest-flung races, he chose the wind tunnel.

Just popped in to say thank you and a fond farewell to Frank Williams. The man and his team were an inspiration to a great many people out there, a true legend of his sport and life.

Williams will always have a place in my heart...

I'd prefer it if they did the FW07b colours to honour the first world championship... With say a one off Saudi Airlines company sponsorship at the Saudi GP?

I think a week isn't enough to design a completly new livery.

If they'd like to fly me out, I'll grab some masking tape and a couple of cans of paint from Halfords on the way 😂
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Now both Frank Williams and Ken Tyrrel are gone. Without them F1 wouldn't be what it is today.

You missed Colin Chapman. Without the three of them Bernie would not have been able to create FOCA.

Exactly. His invention will be re introduced next year.

Some people absolutely disgust me. The very fact that people who are not directly involved in any of the teams involved feel so aggrieved that a death threat seems to be the rational course of action should be astonishing (it would be astonishing even for those involved!!), however in the ‘virtual’ world of today, it is considered a normal reaction.
Chapeau! Mr Latifi, we’ll done for speaking out. F1 is NOT ‘Reality TV’.
