Would Merc need to test their car at higher engine mode during FP1 to see how it effects ride height? They changed height due to the bumps in COTA..

Usually Merc are the ones that sandbag, but recently, they are the ones that run full power earlier
Mercedes has basically been doing this for years now. Why else would Bottas win almost every first practice?! I wouldn't read too much into it, it's just the normal way they tackle a weekend.

Bottas just went 2nd fastest on a 10-lap old set of Softs . . .

Will not be a contest this weekend. Mad advantage from the RB chassis through s2 and 3.

I've been swapping back and forth between valtteri and Lewis's onboards, and they both have lazy oversteer like they are carrying a decent amount of fuel.

Why is nobody referring to the Austrian GP for comparison? Both high altitude tracks, although may less similar corners.
Btw I don't think the Honda is a high altitude engine (anymore) since they reduced the size of their turbo (and reduced max turbine rpm as far as I remember). Still many variables so we'll see.
A bit of a correction. The Honda turbo was the smallest one up to about 2016. It has gotten bigger since as Honda increased efficiency. It is likely the same size as Mercedes now.
Since they moved the compressor to the front of the engine you can see it's housing in the photos. Looks similar in size to Mercedes.

Very interesting indeed. Lewis not happy with the car yet, either. My expectations have been exceeded thus far.

Yea, Max is using every bit of the track he can to get the lap time, and I'm pretty sure his fastest lap stints where shorter!

Seems like Mercedes won’t come close to Max this weekend. Higher engine mode, yet half a second away.

Both Merc`s drivers didn`t run the M tyre all day long and I wonder why? Presumably, they`ll use them in FP3 hence qualify in Q2 but to have no data still baffles me ...

Regarding race simulation laps, VER (13 laps) and PER (11 laps) were testing just the M tyres posting times in lower 1.21 and higher 1.20 ... the Merc`s drivers were on average at least 1 sec. slower on the S tyres, then they switched to the H tyre and BOT did the same high 1.20 times as VER was doing, low fuel being maybe the main factor for that ...

BOT posted his fastest time on the 10th lap of 11 laps run and even Christian Horner said on Sky that Merc has something in their pocket ...

Max's stints were the same length as Hamiltons on the softer tyre

FP1 was the only session they did this. It was for PU calibration purposes.

I was surprised to see Ferrari struggle so much here. Was expecting them to be competing for pole.

Max
lap
9 out lap
10 1:17.301
11 1:54.166
12 1:43.455
13 1:17.619
14 in lap

Valtteri
lap
7 out lap
8 1:36.822
9 1:18.032
10 1:46.536
11 1:47.223
12 1:21.997
13 1:46.312
14 2:08.344
15 1:22.628
16 1:56.817
17 1:17.725
18 in lap
Valtteri's stint was twice as long, he had two race pace laps in the middle (1:21.997, 1:22.628 ), and did his fastest lap on the last lap.

Again, Max and Lewis had similar stints. I wasn't talking about Bottas
