Aston Martin AMR22

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Looks like it will produce significantly more drag. Strange development.
It's more efficient thereform more downforce per square cm of wing. They will reduce the total drag by making the rest of the wing smaller. Smaller wing for same level of downforce or a little more than it was before.
They now can compromise less between downforce and straightline speed.
For Sure!!

Or you go for more downforce and more effective L/D ratio. So win win. Still i somewhat cannot see that as effective use of resources. And FIA will not like that development because goes against up wash mantra they tried to setup in those rules. And they were clear that any development against spirit of rules will get forbidden in rules quite quickly. Quite a risky development.

The general feed didn't show any examples of the Aston being overtaken. Did the wing endplates make it harder to be followed?

It shouldn’t make a huge difference; the flow lines in the image posted above do not look quite right, but any vortex generated would be pulled into the upwash. However, I am not convinced of any vortex generation, the radius at the edge is carried through to the slot gap

Very clever interpretation I agree.

The main plane vortex would shed through when the DRS flap is engaged making it more efficient.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw AMR playing with different rear wing cord widths throughout the season once they gather more data.

If they opened up the holes in the leading edge of the end plates (which is not legal) they could use it to channel air to the underside of the main plane. E-duct, I called it first.

What would be the effect if the end stubs were hollow? Especially with a taper. Would this give a sort of directable boundary?

Aston Martin is smart they consulted with the FIA throughout its development it’s unlikely to get banned next year.
However, Aston Martin performance director Tom McCullough has revealed that as well as the FIA being happy with the regulatory aspect of the design, it was also satisfied that the concept did not scupper the intent of the rules to help the racing.

Keep in mind that Mercedes consulted the FIA on DAS.

So long as AM carry on near the rear of the grid, no one is likely to spend too much time protesting, unlike with DAS. If the end plate had been brought to the grid by one of the team near the front, there would have been a lot more lobbying. Such is F1 politics.

It will be interesting to see if one of the top teams implement a similar design, even if just to get the FIA to step in.
