Just watched the COTA "Weekend Debrief" on F1TV, and they have run a simulation, according to which Hamilton on mediums would have won:

no idea how it works, or how accurate these things usually are, though.
When did the W13 suddenly become as quick as the RB18? That simulation shows the Mercedes matching the Red Bull's pace for whole of the last stint. Does anyone really think that's realistic?

Why else would they be challenging?
As Alonso said in the drivers briefing… this effectively sets a precedence going forwards in regards to damage and the timescale for penalty. 1 hour, 1 day, 1 year…
When has the FIA ever been consistent?
Indeed :
"In this case, that was the revelation that Haas was advised by an FIA official in Race Control that the team had an hour to submit its protest, not 30 minutes as laid out in Article 13.3.5 of the FIA International Sporting code."

Imagine it was for the championship...would FIA revert the championship result in a similar situation? Pathetic.

Wait so Steiner just said the race director told HAAS they had 1 hour to lodge and not 30 mins......

Jeez, this sport is just all over the place.

Well, Hamilton is certainly there or thereabouts. Ok more track evolution but he lost a lot of time stuck in traffic in sector 2. The high DF they have was paying of in sector 2 and costing a bit less in sector 1.

Think they were talking to the Stewards and not anyone from the FIA(race director). The race director had already certified Alonso's car in parc ferme and refused to raise the black and orange flag. Haas had already called him twice to ask him to wave the orange & black flag at Alonso during the race and he refused. Doubt they would have tried to talk to him again.

Haas should know the rules and should not be depending on anyone's opinion of what they are.

IMHO it is not a coincidence the FIA are reversing a wrongful penalty of 30 seconds. The time limit is just the way of covering it.
Rather typical public relations spin.

Yeah, but it is wrong, as now the problem will remain, any loose part detected by any competitor can take you out of the race still up to 30 minutes after the race.

That is wrong imho. Stewards should pull you in during a race, then there is still chance to do something, like Alonso did. Not after the fact when the outcome is a given.

Now they only said the protest was too late.

Think you mean the race director. They did put on the agenda for some meeting with the teams to talk about how they want it policed. To get better consistency.

Yes, sorry, the RD, he has to bring it in front of the stewards. Imho for mirror end wing end plates, not really needed. But granted, a hard choice.

When Alonso returned to the pits the FIA "inspectors " should have given the green light to reenter then or not, they have people watching and ticking off everything else like tyres etc IM uneducated about scrutinising O

You mean after the race ? After the race, they go to parc fermé and are scrutinised. He did pass that. Driving with only one mirror has not been a problem in the past.

In the decision doc point 19 says:
Accordingly the Stewards determine that the Original Protest was not admissible and therefore the Decision in Document 61 is rendered null and void.
IMHO this means that the initial decision is not a precedent, even though it only got scrapped on inadmissibility and not because they deemed it wrong, it's as if it never happened.

They also want to reduce the use of the black and orange flag, so it's fair to assume that it won't be an issue and that there won't be (m)any protests over flappy bodywork post race in the future.

Thank you RZS, good points. Yes, that also sounds like the right decisions to me, better late then never.

This AMuS article also discusses the rule, and concludes that the teams have worked with FIA to come to more reasonable rules. It is up to the teams to declare whether something is unsafe or not again, and black and orange flags won't happen for endplates/wing mirror mounts hanging anymore
