Lewis had DRS on backmarker which gained him 0.4s.

24s/66laps is 0.36s, and in Miami it was 52s/57laps which was 0.91s down per lap. Circumstances of course impact these times, but it is just an observation for now... I agree we need to wait till Silverstone.

At Miami Russell was 25s off the lead at the end of the race.

Gaps aside, it was the first time in a long time the Mercedes actually looked like a reasonable race car.

As it was their first time using a totally new concept (we can't count Monaco) which they are still yet to fully understand/setup it does look quite good for them in terms of substantial progress. I would not be surprised if, at the majority of tracks, they are now comfortably the second-best car.

imo, the issue with Aston & Ferrari, is that their cars didn't have a wide enough set-up/performance window to deal with large climate shift over the weekend.

What Merc's upgrades did more than anything else was make the drivers (specifically Ham more confident in the car), and widened the set-up window.

check the reply 4 posts above yours. 0.3 gap was pretty much average for the whole race.

Whole race a bit skewed given the harder compound.

I think comparing the last stint when they were both on the soft would be a decent shout.

Can’t really compare soft tyre to mediums and medium to hard. Bit like comparing apples to oranges.

Can't really compare Max's times to anyone - once he had a gap after the initial laps, he was just cruising. Could have been 1 second off the real pace of the car for all we know.

If you take off the last 2 laps which seem to be outliers for lewis it is 17.617(max) 17.910 (Lewis). No idea on tyre age of them both. So safe to say Lewis was 3-4tenths off Max on average across the last stint when they both were on the same compound.

But as JAF has just said - bit hard to compare times when we dont know if either driver was just cruising. Maybe Russell and Perez, but you can go round in circles all day trying to look for tits and tats in the data/timesheet.

When you compare the fast lap attempts that were a lap apart, and correct for Hamilton's DRS, it becomes more clear who had what on the day when they wanted it.

imo ham probably had a bit more average pace in hand beyond his fastest lap but he pretty much settled for P2 once he got past sainz. there was no way he couldve pushed to close the gap and keep the tyres alive to the end. had he not been hit by norris at the start and he got past sainz a lot early who knows if he wouldve pushed a bit harder or used alternative strats.
