Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I spy with my aero eyes, vertical inlet outwashing pods :D reminiscent of the second iteration Mclaren last year - before they fully went down the ramp path.

And they have a downward angled canon outlet instead of the shrink-wrapped one on the W13

Just a reminder: this is the car thread, one out of 10 “sacred” car threads. Hardware analysis goes here, but “will they won’t they win” belongs in the team thread. Thank you.

So the inlets are actually still vertical and there is an actual mirror bracket now. Not convinced by continuing with this idea at all... Still a better integration than W13, we'll see. The top of the car is even bulkier than last year, while sides are wider... :?

Big front wing concept change, seemingly less outwash.

I will say it: Maybe, they will change side pods in Bahrain? Like they did last year? Sidepod's shape looks too simple to me.

They've got a really interesting front wing endplate solution, looks like they've managed to fit some downwashing winglets in the transition from main plane to endplate

I thought that type of slottet front wing endplate was illegal?

Interesting channel up going along the sides of the intake. Almost like the Halo extended all the way to the back.

Bigger downwashy bulge around the front suspension members, nicer looking sidepod intakes (and they retracted them behind the big sidepod wing for legality), wider engine cover, rear suspensions look similar...

The car in the launch show has a different floor than the car in the photos above (no floor stays for a start)

Certainly exciting they got creative with the rules again with the endplate transition on the front wing! I really hope Kyle will find time to post something on how it might be legal. I certainly expect them to run the outwashing vanes on the last element in the real car.

Also nice little detail behind the helmet

It also looks like they gave up quite a bit of floor area. That is a huge indent they are running!
