It's more likely it was a different (early) spec of wide inlets and they weren't happy with them. If it isn't raced, it doesn't count within cost cap, so they decided to work some more and improve them further. Maybe :mrgreen:

In comparison images of sidepod entrance the top "lip" has been raised in it's lower edge (inside the entry) to give a thinner planing geometry of air separation going into or over the top sidepod surface.
Look carefully at the point where that section meets the main tub to see the difference as old and new sections are blended there.

Extending the lower lip further forward in relation to top may have the effect of more air into undercut as pointed out in previous post. More valuable though seems to be containing inlet overspill as the relative throughput of internal flow peaks as speed of vehicle increases, the lip prevents this from bleeding into the downstream and promoting all extraneous air over the top surface.

Possible one of the "secret" but hidden in plain sight details on this car. Many have copied the sidepod concept, but this appears only fully implemented on this car.

Or, the part used in the first 3 races was RB18 and used out of cost reduction and only upgraded to the RB19 part once it reached its max lifespan.

Red bull changes for Baku.

seems to be a substantial package with more than just the sidepod inlets, as was reported by AMuS/potential insider. Hopefully we'll get some pictures soon. Especially of floor edge and floor fence

Hmm so the side pod inlet might not be an "upgrade"? It's listed as a "circuit specific cooling change".

I don't understand why it's described as "circuit specific".

Perhaps there is a balance shift or a drag reduction.

I'd say efficiency gain. Higher speeds, more charge cooling, smaller rear openings.

We'll have to wait and see if this truly is circuit specific. If so, what advantage does it offer at a top speed / low drag course like Baku which would not apply to other courses? The frontal area looks identical.

Normally cooling inlets are related to the average cooling power offered by the circuit. This is roughly proportionaly to the average circuit speed. I found a plot of average circuit speed:

Baku is in the middle of the road, a little bit faster than Bahrain, but slower than Jeddah and Australia. It could be that this inlet is targeted towards circuits with lower average speeds?

+1 on that infographic. Ambient temps, time on throttle, altitude, as well, I would think. The inlet area does not seem to have changed though, which would imply it's more about external airflow rather than internal. Given mid average speeds, maybe this is what we'll see at lower avg speed tracks, as you mention.

With the season re-starting, a reminder for everyone that the car threads are moderated more strictly than other threads, with the idea that car threads should focus on the hardware and interpretation of how it works. And on the specific car in each car thread, please. We like our car threads shorter, focused and fact dense.

If a post is about the competition side of F1, be it faster/slower than, lap times or driver behavior, please, post it in the team threads instead (or even in the race thread!). Team threads are moderated very loosely, go wild in there. Future car parts, also in team threads, please, as they are by definition speculation, at least without an insider source.

Posts made in the car threads that are not focusing on the hardware are subject to be moved to other threads or, most likely, removed (as there are too many).

That said: Thank you for the last few pages, which were mostly focusing on the car. =D>
