Serious question time now. Is this a 100 year flood, or what kind of event is this for the area?

I think it is really bad. They changed from drought to flood and the flood is really bad and affecting a lot of villages without any preparation. That is a lot to clean up.
The decision is right. There is no infrastructure, no hotels, no police and fire brigades to support the event.

average annual rainfall in 750mm

they had 300mm in 48h and 200mm 15 days ago after a year long drought that had made it difficult for the soil to absorb water

Thanks. I live in an area that floods. I've been involved in a few civil projects and we design around certain xxx year flood events. I was just curious what kind of event this one was.

I think this is the differencs...it sounds as if they were not prepared at all for these masses of water.

The race wasn't cancelled because the track was flooded, it was cancelled because the region is suffering a disaster and throwing tens of thousands of extra people in to the region for a sports event at the moment would just be monumentally stupid.

The circuit itself hasn't flooded because the River Santerno hasn't burst its banks in Imola - the levies created to protect the town are working. Parts of the paddock flooded but most likely because they drain in to the river and the outfalls are probably under water.

The hills that the river rises in have had over 200mm of rainfall in 36hr.

The region expects to get c.800mm of rainfall in a year. So even looking at things like 100 year flood histories might not have been enough. A quick google hasn't brought up any information but that's because everything google brings up is to do with the race being cancelled.

They did the right thing cancelling/postponing the race, IMO.

This is a tough break for teams bringing upgrades this race. They can't test them in Monaco so this will set them back some weeks. Especially teams looking for validation here for the next round of upgrades in Spain.

Exactly. "1 in 100" doesn't mean "it only happens once in 100 years", it means "the likelihood is that it will happen 1% of the time". So one could have 3x 1-in-100 year floods in short order, and then nothing for many years.

Also marshals (remember they are volunteers) can't reach the circuit:

road are closed/interrupted
the same for train lines
there is a decree (i don't know if it is the correct english term) form public authority to stay at home

BTW there are already 9 confirmed deaths from the flood in the region
