Renault R31

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Found on twitter:
If you watch closely on this onboard, you can see that ARW is closing automatically while driver stops using throttle http://j.mp/fsza4B #f1

Looks like it closes automatically while driver releases throttle
For example look at 0:35-0:45

Why does the renault have such a distinct sound when getting back on the power halfway through a corner? I was sitting at turn 9-10 and I noticed this on all cars with the renault engine, particular the R31 and RB7, but lacking in the Merc and Ferrari cars. These seem to have a seemless transition when the driver gets back on the accelerator.

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

I guess it's due to special engine mapping for the retarded ignition.

On the other hand, Petrov said, they brought many new parts. Until now I saw only revised sidepod outlets. Do you have any idea, what might be the other new things? I know that it could have been bunch of mechanical tweaks impossible for us to spot, but maybe something aero-wise as well?

What's also interesting on this photo is that they used larger brake ducts.

Yeah that would ruin the performance of his car somewhat! All that damage is around the area where the exhausts are trying to feed, so I'd imagine that was also stalling / messing with the diffuser.

Well, good on Nick for getting that thing to the finish. He had some bad luck all weekend and soldiered on...

And Vitaly was quite impressive. I was really happily surprised by his performance, and that Renault really has something going for it when it's in one piece.

Photo I took of Heidfeld's damage in Melbourne. This is at post-race scrutineering.

It's connected to the exhaust, so compliant with rules.
