According to the British newspaper 'The Daily Telegraph', Renault F1 Team boss Flavio Briatore earned more than $11 million due to his control on F1's broadcast rights in Spain. Briatore's UK-based company owns the Spanish broadcasting rights after Flavio obtained them from his friend Bernie Ecclestone in 2002.

After buying the Spanish rights, Briatore's protegé Fernando Alonso became World Champion two years in a row, 2005 and 2006, which led to a huge boom in the popularity of the sport in Spain.
