Ecclestone stands firm with 'winner takes all'

After the FIA unanimously approved the 'winner takes all' points system, advocated by Bernie Ecclestone, it appears that the rule will be postponed to 2010. Quickly after the announcement, the FOTA already expressed their worries about the late rule change.

Experienced drivers such as Fernando Alonso and Nick Heidfeld had already expressed their worries about the new system.

Because the change was announced so late ahead of the start of the season, it would require consent of the teams, which now appears hard or impossible to realise. Despite the lack of support however, 2010 looks likely to see the points system change as it wouldn't require approval by the teams.

"It will be introduced next year," Ecclestone told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It will be supported by the FIA and it will be in the regulations. So when people enter the championship, that's what the regulation will be."

"The whole idea has nothing to do with winning the world championship, the idea was to make sure people raced to win in every race, not to be second or third and collect points."
