We got the best result we could - Alonso

Two time World Champion Fernando Alonso finished his home Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya in 5th place, thus collecting four points. The Spaniard was satisfied with the result and the fact that his team is improving, though Alonso calls on his team to work even harder to be able to fight at the front.

Fernando, were you pleased with your Spanish Grand Prix?

"I think we got the best result we could. Honestly, before the start I really thought that finishing in 9th or 10th would be the best we could aim for this weekend. The cars in front of us were much faster, we were lighter on fuel and our first stint was very short. Also, the cars just behind us were heavier on fuel and I thought they were therefore going to be ahead of me after my stop. In the end that's not what happened..."

You spent a lot of the race in 6th, but you crossed the line in 5th...

"Yes, that was a nice little bonus. The team came on the radio and told me that Felipe Massa was slowing down, apparently because of problems with his fuel consumption. I was 20 seconds behind the Ferrari at that time, but he slowed down so much that I was able to catch him within two or three laps and then I passed him on the final lap."

Did you enjoy overtaking him?

"One car had a technical problem, the other did not. In this situation it's not totally rewarding. The bad luck for your rival is good fortune for you, and the problems for Massa allowed me to score an extra point. I finished 5th which is a satisfying result."

Finally, what was your verdict on the weekend as a whole?

"We have certainly improved, but not enough to be able to fight at the front. We are in a good position; scoring points, but we need to need to work even harder to get to be more competitive. We will see if we can manage that in Monaco in two weeks time."
