Fuji not to stage any more F1 races

A short comeback followed by a swift exit: The "Fuji International Speedway" will not be staging any more Formula One races in the near future, BMW Sauber has reported. The track owners have decided not to hold any further Grands Prix on the Japanese circuit as part of an attempt to cut costs.

As part of the previously agreed annual race-sharing deal with Suzuka, Formula One was not due to come to Fuji this season anyway, but the pinnacle of motorsport's future stop-off in the Far East will now probably only come at the popular and demanding 'Suzuka International Racing Course'.

In 2007, Fuji celebrated its comeback into the pinnacle of motorsport, which had begun in 1976 on the 4.563 kilometre track at the foot of Mount Fuji and already disappeared off the racing calendar by 1978. Torrential weather conditions resulted in chaotic track conditions at the newly modernised track's premier. Despite numerous protests from the drivers, however, the race was not abandoned. The BMW Sauber F1 Team recorded its best result in Fuji the following year when Robert Kubica from the Munich and Hinwil team took second place and eight WC points.
