Why did Racing Bulls elect to sign Arvid Lindblad?

Explaining the decision to promote Red Bull's junior driver Arvid Lindblad into an F1 race seat, Racing Bulls team boss Alan Permane reasoned that the British driver earned his promotion with his "rapid progression marks him as one of the standout young talents in the sport."
Ahead of this weekend's season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Racing Bulls announced Liam Lawson will stay with the team for a second year while Red Bull's junior driver Arvid Lindblad will make his debut with the Faenza-based outfit.
Lawson joined the Italian outfit for the second half of the 2024 season, replacing Daniel Ricciardo. The Kiwi was then promoted to a full-time drive with parent team Red Bull for his 2025 campaign—replacing Sergio Pérez to partner Max Verstappen—but was demoted after the second round.
Since returning to Racing Bulls from Round 3, Lawson finished in the points-paying position on seven occasions, registering his best result in Azerbaijan with a fifth-place finish.
As for Lindlad, the Briton will become the 20th Red Bull Junior Programme driver to reach F1. The 18-year-old driver, who was born and raised in England, to a Swedish father and a mother of Indian heritage, graduated to junior formulae aged 15, competing in Italian F4 from 2022 to 2023, and finishing third in the latter with Prema.
After winning in Formula 4 at the 2023 Macau Grand Prix, Lindblad progressed to FIA Formula 3 in 2024, achieving several wins and placing fourth.

Lindblad then won his first title at the Formula Regional Oceania Championship with M2 Competition. Lindblad graduated to FIA Formula 2 with Campos for the 2025 season, becoming the youngest winner in F2 history.
Reflecting on Racing Bulls' decision to promote Lindblad into an F1 seat, team boss Alan Permane added that his "rapid progression marks him as one of the standout young talents in the sport."
“Firstly, a huge congratulations to Isack. He has delivered a truly outstanding season, demonstrating exceptional race-craft and consistency well beyond his experience.
"He has fully earned his step up to Red Bull Racing and we wish him nothing but the best as he takes on this exciting new challenge in his career – we are proud to have been part of the journey.
“Liam has shown impressive performance and professionalism throughout this year, he has excelled when conditions have been at their hardest and we look forward to building on this in 2026, while Arvid’s rapid progression marks him as one of the standout young talents in the sport.
"Together, they form a strong and dynamic pairing, one that embodies the ambition and youthful spirit of VCARB as we enter a transformative new era for Formula One.”
Reflecting on the announcement, Lindblad added: “I’d like to thank everyone at VCARB for the opportunity. Since I started this journey at five years old, it was always my goal to be in Formula One so it’s a proud moment to take this step.
"I’m extremely grateful to the Red Bull Junior Programme and my personal team for their guidance, mentorship and belief; none of this would have been possible without their support.
"2026 will be a big challenge and I know there’s a lot to learn, but I’m ready to work closely with the team and rise to it. I can’t wait to get started, it’s going to be an exciting year!”
Commenting on his contract extension, Lawson said: "I'm really looking forward to racing with VCARB in 2026. It's an opportunity I'll continue to be grateful for as we enter a year of change in F1.
"I'm ready to get to work with the team as we prepare for the challenging season ahead. It's going to be an exciting year and I can't wait to kick it off with my first pre-season with the team."
