STATISTICS CORNER: Verstappen and McLaren are the most successful in Austria

By on

Four-time World Champion Max Verstappen has been the most successful driver at the Austrian Grand Prix, while McLaren is the most successful team, courtesy of its seven victories in Austria.

This year's race is the 39th edition of the Austrian Grand Prix, while Formula 1 celebrates its 41st appearance in Styria. The first race was held in 1964 on a track that made use of the Zeltweg military airfield, just a stone's throw from the current venue.

The race moved to Spielberg in 1970, when the circuit was known as the Österreichring, which remained its home until 1987. After a ten-year break, the event returned for a further six years on a shortened layout known as the A1-Ring. In 2014, the circuit was renamed the Red Bull Ring. In 2020 and 2021, the venue also hosted the Styrian Grand Prix, held on back-to-back weekends with the Austrian Grand Prix as part of the revised calendars during the Covid years.

Max Verstappen is the most successful driver in Austria, with four victories in the Austrian Grand Prix and one in the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix. The Dutchman also tops the all-time standings for pole positions (five) and podium finishes (eight).

Twenty-seven drivers have won at least once in Austria, eleven of them World Champions: Alain Prost, Alan Jones, Mika Häkkinen, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, Emerson Fittipaldi, Niki Lauda, Nigel Mansell, Jacques Villeneuve, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Last year's winner was Lando Norris.

The most successful team in Austria is McLaren, with seven victories. Mercedes and Ferrari are tied for second with six wins apiece.

Ferrari leads the way for pole positions with eight and also has the most podium finishes, with 30.
