I did my best - Fisico

Giancarlo Fisichella’s race in Monaco was effectively compromised by his penalty after the qualifying. But he put in a spectacular drive to finish sixth and score 3 points for the Mild Seven Renault F1 Team.

Giancarlo, what was it like out there this afternoon?

"Difficult, really difficult. I started from a bad grid position because of the penalty I got after qualifying. I had a strategy for P4 or P5, and I started P9. So I was in traffic for most of the afternoon, and stopping earlier than the cars around me."

So what was the key to scoring points today?

"I knew I had to be aggressive – and I was. Overtaking in Monaco is really, really hard but I knew it was necessary if I wanted to be in the points. I got three cars I think on the track – Rosberg, Villeneuve and Coulthard. That was really nice."

Even so, you finished behind some cars that only did one stop – was that an option for you?

"No, because we were on a two stop strategy, and I didn’t have the option to change my strategy after qualifying. I think the guys who did one stop were lucky with the safety car – if I could have run my full stint, maybe I could have stayed ahead of them. But that’s not how it turned out…"

Even so, you finished sixth and you are now third in the championship…

"Exactly, you have to be positive. I did my best and we had a pretty exciting afternoon. I had to bounce back again, but I showed I can do it. I should have probably been on the podium this weekend but I am happy with my performance, given where I started from."
