Decision to start preparing for the 2008 season was the right one - Kovalainen

Yesterday, the Formula One drivers arrived at Istanbul Park for the Turkish Grand Prix weekend. The Finnish ING Renault F1 Team driver, Heikki Kovalainen, seems pretty excited to get back on track after a three-week summer break.

Heikki, what did you do during your holidays?

"I went home to my family in Finland. It’s the first time this year that I’ve gone back to my country. We’ve got marvellous beaches in Finland and I took advantage of them while keeping up my fitness programme. I relaxed and did some fishing, which I adore. I caught a big fish, around 5 kilos!"

So it’s back to the grindstone, what are the innovations?

"Nothing really special in fact. The holidays allowed me to unwind, that’s for sure, but we’re all very motivated at the prospect of getting back out on the track this weekend and tackling the last part of the season."

It’s said that Renault is stopping the development of the R27...

"Rather than stopping the development of the R27 it’s the design of the 2008 car that’s got under way. It’s normal at this time of year so as to be ready for winter testing. We’re going to concentrate on getting the best out of the R27 to try and notch up a few good results before the end of the season - that’s what I’m hoping for anyway. What’s very positive is that the whole team’s still highly motivated and is buckling down to the design on the 2008 car. We’ve solved the problems linked to our wind tunnel and once again we’re able to get the best out of each second spent therein. The decision to start preparing for the 2008 season was the right one."
