Kimi Raikkonen recorded the fastest time in the first free practice session at Barcelona. He was closely followed by his teammate while number 3, Lewis Hamilton was half a second slower than the Ferrari's. Fernando Alonso set the sixth time at his home GP.

It was only after half an hour that the session really came to action when Nakajima was the first to set a fast laptime. Only moments later most of the drivers went out to start testing.

While it is really too early to say how each team progressed with their new car developments, Renault have the started the weekend well with 6th and 7th places from their drivers, ahead of another Renault powered car, that of David Coulthard.

Felipe Massa meanwhile set the second fastest time of the session but also spun off on his first attempt, marking a mixed start of the season for the Brazilian.
