Re: 2021 Mclaren F1 Team

Post

I think I'm just about getting over yesterday but I have two thoughts...
(1) the events of Monza and Sochi triggered old memories. This is what every race weekend was like from the late 1980s (when I first started following F1) until 2012. When McLaren was in contention for the win every single weekend for most of that period. I still clearly remember the highs of Hakkinen beating Schumi in 1999/2000 and 2008 Brazil and the pain of the Hakkinen and Kimi last lap blowups while leading. I had forgotten what that felt like in the last 10 years.
(2) Yesterday showed that Monza was no fluke. I do not expect McLaren to contend for the win every weekend. But like Paul diResta said on Sky during the race, it is clear that McLaren has taken the next step and can threaten for the podium on most tracks.
Sundays mean a lot more now.

It does seem that if Mclaren hit the front- they have the pace to stay there.
The switch to Merc has definitely been validated👍🏻

That was a no brainer. Unless Renault did something like give them a discount or something.

I haven't specifically kept track this year, but it seems to me that in general Mclaren has the pace or thereabouts when Merc or RB don't have the Q2 tire advantage they get a lot of the time. From what I recall, when they start on the same compound they seem to be in the mix instead of Merc/RB pulling away off into the distance.

I think its also a change of mindset. Now that there is no risk of finishing worse than P4 in the championship, they are more focused on taking the fight to the front rather than defending behind in recent races

In General if RBR and or Merc start ahead, they run away. If they start behind but on a track where they can pass easily, they run away. It usually takes Special circumstances (ie penalties, Q4, rain) to get ahead of Max and/or Lewis on the grid. Lewis and Max have each made several mistakes that have led to DNFs or last minute charges from behind. That might be why McLaren have appeared to be more in the mix.

I agree and I'm okay with that considering the past few years. Like I said on saturday, all I want is for the team to dump all their efforts into next year so they don't repeat 2009 and maybe climb a bit closer to the top in the pecking order.

For me, this is the video that says it all about how Lando must be feeling.

I bet he feels bad (VERY), but I loved to see how he raced and leaded the race!! =D>

If you look back into the race, before disaster happened, Lewis and Lando were literally the only ones laping in the 1.37's

Lando was going almost 2 seconds per lap faster than Carlos!!

Not to mention that Lando actually had enough pace to take fastest lap away from Lewis.

That's pretty cool man. Shame it ended the way it ended, but there were so many positives to take from this race.

I’m sure he’s over it by now, just a pity his fans can’t move on as quickly

Dunno about that. A broken neck can leave you paralysed and unable to do anything for yourself...
