#Qatar GP Race Setup

Toyoharu Tanabe
Honda Racing F1

The Brazilian Grand Prix was somewhat disappointing for both our teams, but now we are focused on the next race, the last round of this final triple-header of the season in Qatar. The Losail circuit will be a new experience for all the F1 teams. It is one of the longer tracks on the calendar at 5.4 kilometres, with mainly fast and medium speed flowing corners and its main straight is particularly long at over one kilometre. We’ll be racing under floodlights in a desert setting, something we are well used to from other tracks in Middle East.

With no actual track data, we have carried out plenty of simulation work ourselves and along with our two teams and we will have to wait until the start of free practice on Friday to see how well we have prepared. It will be crucial to optimise the settings quickly, based on actual running data from practice, therefore it’ll be another very busy weekend for both engineers and mechanics. There are only three races to go now, and we’ll be trying our very best at all time to ensure we have nothing to regret come the end of this tough competition.

19 - 21 November 2021 Qatar Grand Prix F1 2021 Round 20

With plenty of data to work through from the first running on a new track, we will spend the time between now and FP3 analysing everything we have gathered to ensure the optimal operation of the PU ahead of qualifying.

Toyoharu Tanabe
Honda Racing F1

The first two practice sessions at the Losail track took place in very different conditions, FP1 in daylight and FP2 starting at sunset, which means that there is a significant temperature difference between the two. FP2 was therefore the most relevant, as it took place at the same time as qualifying and the race. As this is the first time Formula 1 has visited Qatar, it was important for all our drivers to do as many laps as possible, for themselves and for the teams to acquire plenty of data.
We will now analyse it all tonight, as it is clear that there is more performance to be gained from the car-PU package for qualifying and the race with both teams.

21 November 2021 Qatar Grand Prix F1 2021 Round 20

Toyoharu Tanabe
Honda Racing F1

The first ever Qatar Grand Prix turned out to be an exciting race for us, with both Red Bull Racing Honda drivers doing a lot of overtaking. Max, who had an unfortunate grid penalty, immediately moved up the order from starting seventh to get up to second place quite quickly to finish on the podium, while Checo also produced a strong drive to go from eleventh to fourth. Today, we really got everything out of our package. Things did not go so well for Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda. Pierre inherited a front row grid position because of penalties for others, but neither he nor Yuki, who started eighth, had enough race pace today and finished outside the points. It was particularly disappointing as they had both been so quick all weekend up until today. In general, this was not an easy weekend for us, but the result was important, as Max still leads the Drivers’ classification and Red Bull has closed the gap to Mercedes in the Constructors.’ Now, we have a one week gap without a race, so we will work hard with both our teams to see how we can improve our performance for the final two races of the seasons. Finally, congratulations to our former Honda colleague Fernando Alonso on his podium finish. He drove a great race, showing excellent tyre management skills.

Those last two posts: very classy, as you'd expect from Honda. Still a pity they are leaving even though the PU's remain in another name, and even though I still think they initially approached this return wrong (which probably led to them going now, though with success at last), both that and this class is part of their DNA.

Interesting to read that ip is not getting transferred as it is owned by both Honda and ilmore, i would have imagined it to be only on components that were jointly developed, and even those must be quiet a few generations back. Did ilmore and Honda work together past 2017?

AMUS

Red Bull continues to expand its engine department. So far, 170 employees have already been taken on board. RB Powertrains is set up in such a way that there is a choice: Either do everything themselves or in partnership with a manufacturer.

Porsche could come. Red Bull has set up its engine department in such a way that it is open to all options. "We can do everything ourselves or partner with a manufacturer," explains team boss Christian Horner. Red Bull has selected its staff in such a way that the combustion engine will definitely be created in Milton Keynes. But expertise in the field of the turbocharger and the battery would be welcome. This could be Porsche's territory.

It will be a few years before that happens. Red Bull has until 2026 to get its own powertrain up and running. Things are supposed to get underway from mid-2022. By then, the new drive regulations will be finalised in detail, so that the development of the engine, MGU-K, battery and power electronics can begin. By then, most of the work bans on the future Red Bull engineers will have expired.

Red Bull is fighting to be classified as a newcomer in the new engine era, which means a higher cost cap and more test bench hours. If it comes to a joint venture with Porsche, this could cause trouble. Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault have already announced that they would not accept two players developing in parallel for a while and then throwing their results together. That would have put the brakes on cost and test-bench limits.

Currently, 170 employees have already been recruited for the new company. 45 of them come from the Mercedes engine forge HPP. From Red Bull's point of view, this has the nice side effect of weakening its World Championship opponent. The majority of the staff will be occupied with the development and construction of the new drive unit. They don't have to take care of the day-to-day business yet. That will be done by Honda on behalf of the team.

Red Bull has not bought the intellectual property of the Japanese, but has acquired the right to use it. This is also because part of the IP also contains the development of Honda partner Ilmor. And that was not for sale. Since the rights remain with Honda, it is also up to the Japanese to assemble and maintain the product on behalf of others.

Whether this will continue until 2025 has not yet been decided. The contracts with Honda are reviewed year by year. Since the engines continue to be built in Honda's Sakura development centre, it is somewhat difficult to look over one's shoulder. Honda may be out of Formula 1, but they also have an interest in making sure their legacy works reliably. Especially in the first year with the new E10 fuel.

Experts already have the impression that Honda secretly regrets the exit and is keeping up the umbilical cord to Formula 1 by servicing Red Bull. The way the new engine regulations are shaping up, it would also be interesting for Honda. And with a budget cap and test bed restrictions, it is also ensured that Formula 1 will no longer be a money-destroying machine

There are only two more races this season and only two more for Honda before we leave the sport. We go into this final pair of back-to-back races fighting for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles and it starts this week in Saudi Arabia, which is hosting its first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit runs alongside the Red Sea using normal roads and is described as a street track, but it has nothing in common with places like Monaco or Singapore. At 6.174 kilometres it is the second longest circuit of the year and instead of 90 degree corners, typical of a street venue, it has 27 mainly high speed flowing turns with a predicted very high average speed. We know it features a long full throttle section and is generally high speed, but there will be many things to discover after the cars actually go out on track on Friday, such as the type of asphalt used for the track surface, the ambient and track temperatures and other features linked to its layout.

A new event always means more work for engineers to see how our simulation work correlates with reality and we will need to be ready to adjust settings very quickly during the sessions. Therefore, just like Qatar a fortnight ago, this will be a very busy weekend for the engineers. Everyone at Honda knows what our target is for these last races and we will all be pushing very hard alongside our two teams to achieve our goals.

Max Verstappen 33

[ ..... ] I’m feeling calm, I know that I will always try to do the best that I can and we’ll just find out where we are going to end up. Nothing has been decided yet and we are all up for the challenge, there’s still a lot of racing left to do and we are going to give it our all that’s for sure. It’s going to be an exciting end to the season.

Sergio Perez 11

[ ..... ] We’ve managed to close the gap to Mercedes and now it’s time to go all in, we’ve got nothing to lose, and we will give our very best. If we manage to have two perfect races as a Team then I am sure that we are going to be able to come out on top. It is a very unique challenge, and these final two races will epitomise that. I’m enjoying it a lot coming to the end of the season with such an important fight on our hands. I’m really looking forward to Jeddah and then Abu Dhabi, this is why you start racing, for moments like this.

Pierre Gasly 10

[ ..... ] Judging from what I saw on the simulator, Saudi will be extremely quick, with a large number of very high-speed corners, some of them blind. I think it’s going to be very complicated from a driving point of view and there will be the extra challenge of the track surface being completely new. No cars have ever raced on it, there will be no rubber down and probably some oil will still be coming out of the tarmac, which is what normally happens at a new circuit. So, we are looking at a street circuit with quite low grip, which is a new challenge as no one has any data from the track.

Yuki Tsunoda 22

[ ..... ] I spent some time in the simulator learning the new Saudi track. It’s really fast and that means confidence in the car will be an important factor, because the run-off areas are not so big. It will be important for me to do a good job of building up speed during the free practice sessions. At least I am in the same situation as the other drivers, as this circuit will be completely new to everyone, just like Qatar.

A First Look At Saudi Under The Lights

Toyoharu Tanabe
Honda Racing F1

This was our first day on track for the first ever Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Therefore, as usual at a brand new circuit the two main jobs during Friday practice were firstly to do as many laps as possible to allow the drivers to learn the track and secondly to see how accurate were the predictions from our own simulation work and that of our two teams so that we could optimise our settings. FP1 took place in the early evening, but the timing of FP2 was more relevant, as it ran at the same time as qualifying and the race. That meant we were also able to work on settings relating to cooling. We had a trouble-free day with our two teams and four cars and acquired plenty of chassis and PU data to analyse overnight to prepare as well as possible for the next two days. This is only the first day, but our positions on the time sheet for both teams are not too bad.

A Dramatic Race In Jeddah

Toyoharu Tanabe
Honda Racing F1

The first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix turned out to be a very chaotic race, which had to be red flagged twice. For Red Bull Racing Honda, Max who maintained third place at the first start, got the benefit of the first stoppage in terms of pit stop strategy and was able to lead for a while. However, in the end, he had to settle for second place, which is not ideal in terms of the Drivers’ title. As for his team-mate, Checo suffered an unfortunate collision which meant he retired just after the first restart. For Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda, Pierre did a good job of managing a complicated race to finish where he started in sixth place. After a slow start, Yuki was up in the points until his collision with Vettel, eventually finishing 14th, but for a rookie at a difficult track like this, his pace had been good all weekend. In terms of the Drivers’ championship, Max and Lewis are now equal on points, while Mercedes has extended its lead in the Constructors.’ It means both titles will be decided at the final race in Abu Dhabi next Sunday, which will also be Honda’s last Formula 1 race. However, we will not change our approach and simply concentrate on having the best race possible with our two teams and all four drivers.

A few words from the drivers.

This was posted before it was announced that Max had been given a 10-second time penalty and 2 penalty points for
" breaked in a manner which caused a collition with Car 44."

But Yamamoto-san already said there will be no Honda motorhome or hospitality next year (or Twitter feed or press?), which basically means no Honda in F1. Is it possible that could be reverted? :?:
