Dan Fallows lead the RB17 that started out as quite a disappointment, until Newey came back to design office.
We have any source on this?
I remember there was news that Newey had come back to fully work on F1 in 2019 and in his book he said that he did take a step back from F1 for other projects. I believe the book was released around 2017 so it could be true

RBR are well staffed in the aero department; if I were them I'd be looking for a protégé , I'm sure there are more than enough curious and talented individuals who would be more than willing to soak up his philosophy like a sponge, and carry the torch.

Newey is coming from aerospace engineering. Unless someone followed a similar path I dont think he can train them in an F1 team when they only have F1 experience.
For Sure!!

I've done turbine engine maintenance, does that count as aerospace?

Can an F-1 mechanic say he's good for F-1 aerodynamicist gig next year? :P

Didn't Adrian Newey do exactly that? When from being a gearbox monkey at Fittipaldi, to race engineering for CART teams. Then got an aerodynamicist gig at Leyton house.

I could be wrong about the exact details though.

Edit: sorry I forgot, he worked on the ground effects tunnels for Fittipaldi cars

It's amazing how Verstappen has not had mechanical DNF this season, in 21 races. Last year in 17 races he had 5 DNF of which 2 or 3 were mechanical. Depends on whether you see tyre failures as mechanical dnfs ofcourse.

I do not mean to jinx him, just want to point out how good Honda+RedBull have been this season reliability-wise. Sad to see Honda leave when they're only just peaking...

That was a tyre failure, which the OP said "depends on whether you count tyre failure".

Max did have a mechanical failure of his DRS in Zandvoort, luckily it was at the end of qualifying so they could fix it for the race.
