I've searched for some pictures and its hard to find the right ones, but what it looks like to me is that they ran more rake, but the trick suspension flattened the car more at speed than previously.

I'm struggling to find better pictures that are static from testing vs end of season.

You can compare the distance between the top of the diffuser to the bottom of the crash structure between the 2020 and 2021 cars.
The distance is virtually the same suggesting the rake hasn't changed.

Why would the distance between those 2 parts of the bodywork change if the rake were changed?

"Designed in" rake.
The 2021 nose is the same as 2021. Same gearbox and suspension. If you increase rake by say 1degree. The flow structures will be shifted by this or likely even more.

The front splitter will be lifted higher and it's ground effect will be weaker. The front wing will also run lower and be at risk of hitting curbs etc.

RedBull design their floor and gearbox with a built-in rake that allows them to run splitter close and the front wing at the proper height.

It follows that is a collossal change for Mercedes to change the deigned range of the rake mid-season. They can't just jack the back of the car up by two inches and stiffen springs with the same chassis, gearbox and suspension and hope for the best. Everything will be thrown off.

They photos and the quotes from the team don't seem to eveidence enough well, I can't convince you.

Are you suggesting that the teams just change the rake mid-season then? Very serious claim there after the message from the team engineers that I posted.

Of course it won't, those two points of the car are fixed. That distance will always be the same.

Of course it won't, those two points of the car are fixed. That distance will always be the same.

The points are not fixed by regulation. There is a range you can work in. Some cars crash strcutre is closer to the top of the diffuser than others. Not something the average viewer would notice normally.

For Mercedes the distance is the same from 2020. The suspenion mount points are also the same and the external of suspension is also the same. And remained so throughout 2021.

So any rake change is by jacking up the rear of the car. Mercedes said this is not a fruitful endeavour for obvious reasons.

Don't go against my word, go against Mercedes and the photos!

If you see any contradictory information I would be delighted to be corrected.

• The front wing has only three instead of for elements.
• The rear wing looks different.
• The sidepods have the typical Mercedes shape. Very different from the official model.

What is the thinking of the floor in this shot? last years model used to run 18 inch wheels?

I think he'll leave it very late to decide if he's going to be there or not... I'm sure Mercedes would have a plan B for all eventualities. Most F1 drivers are under contract anyway, so if they'd need a replacement, it would be outside the current F1 grid.
