Red Bull RB18 Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

If skipping is "allowed", RB22 would make sense as well.
There was no skipping. There was replacing. RB17 got replaced with a development of the RB16, the RB16B. The next car will thus be the RB18.

The new cars drive more like GT cars than F1 cars.

Many of us here will never forget 3mm-gate (or was it 2mm, or 5mm)?

Probably worth just clarifying this before it gets discussed, the image used on the RB18 launch page is appears to be the showcar:

Exactly, there will never be an rb17, the number is meant to represent the number of years RB have been in f1. There was no 17 as explained already, it was basically an rb16 chassis, so RB16B. Now back to the original tally.

Let’s look at the possible disappointment looming.
It’s quite likely that most if not all the teams will reveal the fia show car through February as their launch car.
The launch could well be just livery.
Be prepared.

I think you're right on that scalex.

Maybe we'll see some differences in mechanicals but suspect the aero surfaces will be vanilla

On top of that, the first tests will likely be the same (AFAIK these are not being televised), and be used for engine testing; the second test is likely to be when we first see initial aero packages run. Still likely to pretty vanilla.
If any team think that they have some kind of magic bullet solution we are unlikely to see it until race #1.

That’s how I would play it….

Yes, and I understand the first test is completely private, no journalists are allowed. We will be reliant on people at the circuit taking sneaky photos and videos.

And even then most of the teams will run a half spec car, not really relevant for the first race.
The concept of the car will probably be there, however most of what is to be put on the car for the first race will probably be missing. The chassis/ side pod inlet area is going to be hard to ignore as it’s pretty much impossible to change this once the concept is set.
But the front wing, rear wing will probably not be what will be on the car come March.
