Why Pirelli’s emergency F1 fixed supply rule looks set to stay

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli is sceptical that teams will go back to having a free choice of compounds for each race weekend,

F1 returns to old format: Friday practice sessions back to 90 minutes

Before the start of the 2021 season, the FIA announced that Friday free practice sessions would no longer be ninety minutes, but sixty minutes. This will be reversed in the new season.

The new sporting regulations of 2022 state that the first and second free practice sessions on Friday will again last an hour and a half, as we are used to from previous years. The third free practice on Saturday will remain unchanged, as it has always lasted sixty minutes.


Three days of F1

Another change to the format is the media days. Last year's Formula One weekend still lasted four days, because media and sports activities were scheduled on the Thursday. In 2022, this will be reversed to three days. However, the teams will have the opportunity to organize something themselves, but the official press conference will no longer take place.

Yes! I can imagine. The ‘Official Press Conference’ has to have been one Hell of a Burden for the past eight years and nothing like the cake-walk everyone thinks!

It’s not about that… Not having any official activities in Thursday, implies that not only the driver’s, but more importantly the media and some team members are allowed one more day in between races… With 23 races in the calendar, that extra day will be important to get some rest (while also help with lowering costs for those involved).

not that surprising. He's employed by Liberty, a sprintrace gives you three days of television interesting stuff instead of two. Four more sprints, is four days, that equals two whole races, all for free.

Why would the teams want more sprint races? It's a cost to them with little benefit. Liberty told the teams that there was more exposure due to the sprint races, meaning more potential income generation. Well that's great, but if you're a team that has had its budget cut significantly, why do you care about more income? You can't spend it on anything F1-related if you're already at the budget limit. Sure, the teams' parent companies can take some extra money, but the big winner is Liberty. And it's thus no surprise they want more sprints. They are the only real winners.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

The other side of the same token is crash damage and engine use for the same exposure. Would there be a different audience from the usual qualli watchers? doubtful.
I really do not see what is to be gained

On Sprint races and the F1 weekend.

I think 3 days is plenty. Over a season, that is like 3 weeks more rest that gets spread out for the teams.

And the Sprint could just replace Q1.

Q1 - 30-minute Sprint: Top 5 drivers in the WDC standing are given a forced Bye and move to Q2 (first race of season would use current Q1 and not have a Sprint). Grid set by WDC position. Awards (6) points for first, (4) points for second, (2) points for 3rd. Top 10 pass to Q2.

Q2 - 15-minute - As now. Top 10 pass to Q3.

Q3 - 10-minute - As now.

EZPZ, and prevents runaway points with the forced bye. Also allows the switch to basic Q1 if weather causes issues, and we have a Sunday morning qualifying session.
