Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I wonder how much free energy they could get if they could windmill the compressor with the car at speed. If you could take some load off driving the compressor at speed, it would buy you a little more battery power.

According to the linked story by Motorsport, the Honda PU will continue to be wholly manufactured in Japan until 2025 instead of the original deal that it would only be so for 2022 following which Redbull would have been manufacturing the PU.

This may also mean the engines would remain badged as Honda until 2025 as well.

Nice. Makes sense. That is a tonne of load taken off RedBull powertrains. Honda also gets to keep a closer eye on their IP (no pun intended) with all those Mercedes hats that will be shuffling around Milton Keynes.

Never expected Honda would transfer production of the all parts to the UK. Suspected allot of production and pre-assembly to be kept in Japan. I would think RPT would do the break-in, tuning and mapping.

But maybe that stays in Japan also.

The RedBull Powertrains operation can now solely focus on the inevitable link up with Porsche to develop the 2026 PU, and Honda doesn’t have to worry about its IP ending up in the fatherland; it’s arguably the best solution for everyone.

We’ve already seen Max’s 2022 lid, and at present there’s no HONDA sunstrip on it, so it would suggest RBR will not run Honda markings, but I suppose it’s an easy fix if they decide to.

Inevitable? It seems like a pretty weak rumor.
RB's just going to spend 100s of millions to build up an engine design and manufacturing firm and just give it away to Volkswagen. Sure...

I think a joint operation with an injection of funding from Porsche isn’t out of the question.

Finally. It's been reported that Honda/RBR have recovered performance from the E10 fuel.
For the second part of the plan, the help of Honda was enlisted. Newey wanted an even narrower rear end and for that he asked the Japanese for an even more compact package than what was driven with last season. According to La Gazzetto dello Sport, Honda succeeded and moreover they have found a solution together with fuel supplier ExxonMobil to recover the horsepower lost with the introduction of the E10 fuel.

Wish we had some "activists" who could buy their way onto the board of Petronas.

RPT is only R&D and some test benches now. If Porsche would decide to team up within one or two years, they would still have invest allot, even past 2026. Redbull would be happy if a partner would take up that bill. Redbull still benefit from that.

I wonder what types of things can be done to create a narrower rear end. Redesigning the exhaust manifolds is one avenue and perhaps shrinking the size of the intercooler, oil chamber (that surrounds the compressor) and other ancillaries in front of the ICE?
