Even since 2014, Mercedes have usually run the most amount of fuel for the longest amount of time during testing.

I wouldn't say. I'm watching Russel drive, it is very lethargic and quite bumpy on the straights! To me it looks like they cannot push.
Wait to see the drivers/team reaction after the day is over is probably the best way to try and read it.

I wouldn't be that negative, after what the testing was for the W12, i have less and less trust in anything that testing shows us in terms of lap times and top speed.

So my takeaway from this thread this morning is the side pods are ugly so now the car is a dud? Got it :lol:

This was regarding sidepod drag only. Though, depends on whether we include the wing as sidepod bodywork or not :lol:

The first question is, does the Mercedes design comply with the regulations? And even more importantly, given this is what the teams will be asking the FIA, does it comply with the ‘intention of the regulations’?

The regulations demand that teams have to supply CAD data to the FIA to allow it to give an opinion on it before it hits the track, so from that I would say that, yes, it does all comply.

I’d also suggest Mercedes is not a team to get led up the garden path by erroneous windtunnel results, so I’m pretty sure it will have researched this concept to death before hitting the manufacturing button
. That’s is why it didn’t make an appearance at the first pre-season test in Barcelona.
Since the rumours that the sidepods were going to be upgraded turned out to be true, I hope that the other rumour that it would be worth lap time improvement also is true.

By perfecting the tight internal packaging concept merc is free to use whatever side pod shape size that falls in between these 2 extremes and beyond. Should their nosidepod side pods fail to deliver they have the flexibility to go wide undercut physically rather easily. On the other hand, if the former prove to work well, no other non merc team have easy means to copy

I thought the 1991 lambo was more relevant than an f-117 and the photos much less invasive.

This.

Doing what they did gives them a lot of options when the sidepods are essentially just body work.
