Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

So redbull 6 tenths clear of everyone else at the end of testing, markedly in cooler conditions.
Is the W13 a dead in the water silver flounder fish?

There is no reason for this car to be rubbish. The suspension is more the issue than the body. The body is producing the downforce.

I think they will be fine in Bahrain when they sort out their suspension.
Maybe they have been so depedent on Hydraulic suspension that they are having trouble living without it.

As for Ferrari's engines... Would love to see them pushed fully against the Mercedes.
I still feel Mercedes has the strongest PU.
For Sure!!

I was thinking this. They have to stop the car sitting down too low don't they, but 'too low' depends on the speed so they can't just put a stop. And yes their specialist subject in suspension was the hydraulics and inerter and all that, that's been banned.

But probably the aero concept is good, for downforce as you say. Whether they can fix it now tho, when they couldn't in 3 weeks between the tests, I'm not sure.

Thats IF they have fixed the reliability issues from last year. No good producing a strong engine, but only lasts 3 races at best. personally I feel the penalty is far too lenient for subsequent engine swaps.

I sill do not buy this being an issue. They simply tried to go to the limits and tested different setups.
They did not even turn up the engine once to test this high speed issue at real top speed, so I do not think they have a real issue.

Next week...still I fear we will see nothing different than 2014....we may never see the real power of the 2022 engine in Q.

Surely if they go faster...the porpoising will be worse?

The customer teams (Mclaren, Williams, AM), will need to use full power even if Merc don't.

It is not always porpoising. The car was on screen with different levels, even in my view sometimes no bouncing at all. If they would not know what is happening, they would have tested with some more speed. But as they did not, I think they know well where the limit is.

Let us see...at least in the last 7 years something kept them from looking particularly strong....in my point of fiew the cooling is the issue. Now with the new concept...maybe you are right and we see some glimpses of engine magic in the McLaren or AM.

But Honda ripped the hell out of the PU numbers rule for a few years at Mclaren and Toro Rosso, and no one gives a damn. Mercedes do it for the first time in the hybrid era and its "change the rules, change the rules!"

According to Kyle.Engineers, the purpose of the strange looking sidepod inlet is to legalize the "downwashing side impact structure" thing.

Im not an engineer but I see some trace of hope that both Ferrari and Red Bull told AMuS that Mercedes is ,,the best in slow corners". Whar does that mean? Mercedes is the best on the mechanical side? Or that the engine has the smoothest transition and delivery to the wheels? Thanks.

I think it means W13 has the best DF and perhaps traction.
