Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Is there any rule to state the floor has to be a certain width? Would a 'smaller' or more profiled floor create less ground effect? Is the size of the actual floor directly proportional to the amount of ground effect created?
Please forgive the silly questions but would it be a benefit to contain the floor and side pods within the wheels?

What was interesting about the sprint-race is that all Mercedes powered cars were sitting ducks on the straight. The only overtake successfully done was by Ricciardo on Magnusen. Other teams were wizzing by much quickly on the main straight.
This was quite noticeable to me as well. Look at how easy it was for Sainz to go past Ricciardo in the sprint and any other car aside from the RB18. However again most people on here are fixated on Mercedes porpoising issues when the real issue is the floor. The suspension might be an issue as well but I'll be honest and say this might only be when the problem is tyre warmup and not the larger issue with the floor flexing and how this is related to the porpoising and ill handling.

The W13 did porpoise with the original sidepod but was the floor flexing with it is the question. It is quite possible that even the Barcelona spec sidepod won't fix the problem and that the only way they are going to fix the flexing is to put a big heavy piece of metal across the section of floor where the flexing is occurring until they can get a sidepod that can resist this issue.

What is it about the Bahrain upgrade that Mercedes thought would "Fix" the porpoising? Toto did say they assumed the Bahrain spec would fix it.

Hamilton tested a floor with a small edge cut off at Bahrain FP1, it didn't stop porpoising and it hasn't been seen since.

In an interview, Toto said something about an upgrade at Miami which should in theory unlock a lot of lap time. Presumably over the second kind of thing.

So I guess the next race is make of break for them.

I think if they don't solve a lot of their problems by Barcelona, they will just not develop the car much at all and figure out their issues first, and then move early to 2023.

But there is probably not a lot they can do to next years car until they know what is wrong with this years car.
The car does not corelate with the model, so it would be the same with a new one until they find the cause.

I'm just baffled, how could they end up with the weakest PU while ending with strongest one last year?

Because that one was a one off. They used Bottas as a guinea pig to design an engine for Hamilton that could run at a higher mode for 3/4 last races. Instead of focusing on 2022, they used time, money and design on an engine soley for Ham.

Because E10 wrecked most manufacturers. Honda discussed this liberally.

Since 2014 and up to last year MB always had a fuel chemical advantage. This year they lost that advantage.

Calm down! hotlapmode and formu1a.ono are not the most reliable sources.
Even summed they have less followers on social media than my flatmate. :)
