Sustainable fuels for 2026. V10's will be green!

Post

This is the perfect case for bringing back the V10 engines. Sustainable fuels. Can't get greener than that! You might see green exhaust coming out of the things.

On another note, I've been looking, but you know if there's a thread already for the 2026 regulations ?

V10s would require at least twice the amount of fuel, thus requiring a return to refueling. Yay!!! We get to watch the fastest racecars sitting stationary for 10s twice a race. How exciting!!! And the occasional fireworks show.

Fair trade to get the 1.5k Hz exhaust note back. Everyone stops for roughly the same period of time, so I'm not sure what the issue is spectacle wise. If pit stops are bad for spectacle then hard compound long life tires should be instituted and pit stops done away with entirely.

Remember. They "only" needed 160kg for the whole race because they were so much lighter.
I think if you added TJI direct injection and today's low friction designs plus KERS they might even need less than 100kg of fuel!

So all the combustion efficiency achieved through last two decades is useless and the V10s still need the same volume of fuel as they did back then? If F1 achieves the objective of shortening and lightening the cars, it would require much lesser force to drive them around. Together, it's still conceivable to have V10s back and not such a long shot.

But much of the efficiency gain is not in the combustion chamber, it's in recovering as much of the energy that comes out of the exhaust ports as possible. A V10 isn't going to be anywhere near the overall efficiency of a current, complicated, hybrid system.

What kind of V10 are we talking?

Thermal efficiency without a turbo will always be less than with one or more turbo's... I think the V8's came in at 30ish percent efficiency? N/A sounds awesome but you'd still need a lot of fuel.

Turbo V10 is possible but you're not going to get the screaming F1 sounds from a boosted V10. Especially the high pitch V10's produce are gone with a turbo. Sure it will sound better than the current engines...

Edit: I mean if you're talking sensible tightly packaged PU's. Some Underground Racing Gallardo's sound absolutely epic but I don't see that kind of setup work in a smaller F1 car.

Supercharged Inline 5 gets TE boost and sounds like a V10...πŸ€”

But a supercharger is really inefficient compared to a turbo.

Again, as I seem to always ask ( ) why mandate a V10? there is a cost cap.
If someone wants a flat 4 or inline 3 why force them to go the V10 route?

Because V10 engines sound awesome. That's the only selling point for it...

The PUs are 50% efficient overall. The ICE part alone isn't. Strip off the energy recover systems and you'd lose a huge chunk of that headline efficiency straight away.
