Double yellow/red flag limiter?

Post

For a sport so technically minded, the people that run the show don't appear to have any common sense or logical thinking of their own.

I've been saying this for years, even before they introduced the VSC. For double yellow, red flag and safety car conditions why can't/haven't they introduced a speed limiter that's either activated by the driver or by race control.

It would make situations like the incident in Japan this year much safer and just about eliminate any serious risks. It's so bleeding obvious, why on earth hasn't it been thought of yet?

Too dangerous. Activate it in the wrong place, and maybe the car goes spinning. Activate it a tenth of a second earlier on a car leading a drafting car, and boom, etc, etc.
Plus wait for the DNF caused by a malfunction of the FIA system...

The driver does have a speed limiter, in his eyes combined with the left foot. He applies it at his discretion and often smoothly.
They also have a pit lane limiter, so all that is needed is an order to use that one. Some of us have lately been wondering why the latter cannot substitute for a VSC and even a real SC.

I'm sure they could implement a system whereby the speed reduction is gradual, it wouldn't exactly be difficult to implement.

As for failings, how many times do we see the pit lane limiter fail?

That's where we are going wrong, we clearly can't always rely on the driver because they often miss things with their eyes or keep that heavy right foot on the gas too long, sometimes they need saving from themselves.

Two front runners passing a backmarker? Could be nasty. Then again as you say it would take time to implement (as dose getting the flag out) so maybe it only actives at the next flag/light position?
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

If it's controlled by race control all 3 cars would gradually slow down to the limiter speed at the same time. I'm sure they could they could manage something with the right people involved.

It's just a proposal but it takes the risk of speeding in dangerous situations out of the drivers hands, they clearly can't be trusted all of the time.
