It's just a marketing gimmick. Certainly of dubious taste, but definitely not "idiotic". Consider though that it still works. Marilyn Manson gets all dressed up like that and sells millions of records. And he certainly is a very smart person, just read some of his interviews. Of course it helps that his music is actually much better than KISS..

Personally, I respect artists that actually posess musical talent, can sing, and compose. That is why I hold such people as Chrissie Hynde in high regard. But as we are all now aware, if you dress up some pretty face in interesting costumes, teach them some choreography, and put real musicians to back them up, they can sell anything, and last for years.
Of course, we all stray. Heck, last week I was watching some Slade. Noddy Holder rocks.

My favourite rock band is Tool. They certainly have got talent, tons of it, they dont pull marketing gimmicks to the extreme, although they recognize the flaws they may have (please read hooker with a penis lyrics ) and its fine by me.

Don't get me wrong, I have LOADS of Aphex twin, but they're IDM ... that's about as far from rock as it's possible to get!!!
