RB20 speculation

RB20 speculation

Post

I just read an article about the rumors of a revolutionary RB20 design (https://www.crash.net/f1/news/1040717/1 ... eir-rivals) and I was thinking, have RBR cracked the W13 concept, and actually made it work?

🤣

I’m just curious what the experts think could be the idea behind the claim that the RB20 would no longer be affected by gusts of wind. Would that mean bigger percentage of downforce generated by the floor or how else could such a feature be accomplished?

.
I read in a French/UK newspaper that Newey called Paolo Filisetti from La Gazzetta dello Sport (Nov 8 ) and told him
all the secrets about the RB20. #-o

Red Bull: "Wrong" to stick with current design for new RB20 car

Red Bull chief engineer Paul Monaghan thinks it would be wrong to simply roll over its current car design for its RB20 Formula 1 challenger despite the domination of 2023.

In the article it is also mentioned he says; "Monaghan has revealed that while the team will not unleash a radical departure over the current design for its 2024 car" . So that would mean they would stick with the design...very confusing.

Not really confusing, just classic example of clickbait. But we can still speculate :D

My guess is that they'll try to adopt the waterslides and go with the suspensions in even more extreme ways, so nobody figures it out.

Keeping Perez makes me believe there is a similarly good car coming

It can be both. RB has been working around a lot of carried over parts and very likely by now have quite a wish list of small things they'd like to change to further optimise the current design path and to open up new possibilities. I am thinking a new tub. Tuned position of SIS, maybe a slightly changed driver position, a bit lighter, etc. So nothing radical and probably very similar to the casual observer, but a new car from the ground up.

They have been working with a lot of restrictions and clearly relied in evolving the RB18. By now they should have quite a stack of improvements that would require a more fundamental change (Tub, suspension, cooling architecture, etc.)

It also seems like they might have overdone the cooling in the RB18 as they have never had any cooling issues and very limited cooling openings. Maybe it will lose most of the centerline cooling and have a narrow airbox...

I tend to agree with that, I’m not sure why they would do another than evolve what they have (much like they did between the the RB18 & RB19).
I think that it is quite likely that the RB19 chassis/tub is the lightweight RB18 (that never got raced in 2022) - never seen any articles about that though.
Less/no centreline cooling would give the car a different look. Ferrari have proved that there is scope within the regs to squeeze an extra inlet into the chassis side that could conceivably be used to supply part of the cooling system (and put the coolers in a position to take advantage of louvre outlets as well as lowering the CoG).

Also with refreshed aero regs coming from 2026 why change a winning formula?

for the sake of competition lets all hope that the RB 20 will be close to the Mp4-18/19

I think the "Radical new design" is a tactic and the RB20 will look much like its predecessor, and following the same concept

I suspect the progress will once again be hidden underneath the bodywork and in the underfloor. Mercedes ran conceptually very similar cars from 2014 onwards in the previous ruleset.

I don't see RB taking a step backwards in terms of reliability on the scale of an MP4-18/19. Much of the issues for the Newey Mclarens were PU and hydraulics. All of that will be carryover to the RB20 so there shouldn't be too many surprises.
