Yes, this is just the first practice, but the speed in the corners is encouraging. And the 9-10 bunch looks top-notch. And this is with a Saudi spec rear wing. I am impressed.

The race pace is good. But I still believe that McLaren will be only the third force and that it is too early to dream of fighting among the leaders. And the likelihood of getting on the podium is still possible only thanks to luck and external circumstances. In any case, so far it looks like the car has some speed to spare and perhaps Albert Park suits the car well.

Lol

Definately not worth reading too much into today.

Aston will drop in the race as usual. Merc get slower over the weekend and we've been hiding some pace on the FPs 1 and 2.

Based on FP pace the expectation is to have Ferrari on pole, RB second and Aston 3rd fastest, in front of McLaren and Mercedes.
But, like also mwillems is saying, this (classic) Friday practice can be a wrong indicator on what Saturday quali will look. And, as Bahrain and Jeddah showed, even if Aston is faster than McLaren in quali (or MCL faster than Mercedes), race (pace) can be another thing.

Quali prediction based on quali sim

race pace based on FP2 runs (not to mention the funny RB pace :)) )

Good choice to use the Jeddah wing here, Bahrain spec looked too big even for Bahrain. They don't lose a lot of time on straights v RB and Ferrari, practically non of it, in Q trim. In race pace they are basically the quickest on straights bar Mercedes, but I think Mercedes used higher PU mode in FP2 (or at least Russell).
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Looking at Williams decision to give Sargeant "car" to Albon, due to unfixable chassis, I was wondering if this is something related to "smaller teams" (and I have a pain in the heart saying this about Williams but '90s are so far away in the past) or this can happen also to McLaren, Ferrari or RB? If a chassis is not fixable, you have to race with only one car?

No. Williams are in unique situation where they couldn't produce spare chassis due to low production capacity, poor logistics management and a completely revamped 2024 car. McLaren like most teams will have a few spare chassis or fly one overnight if need be.

Thanks' mate! Sad to see a team like Williams in this situation (just saw on SkyF1 the '96 race where Williams, with P1 for Hill and P2 for Villeneuve won AusGP by more than a minute vs Schumacher P3 in a Ferrari. What a period for Williams, and where they are now :()

I’ve seen the analysis, someone even reckons Mclaren are the fastest in race trim looking at the FP2 running.

I was commenting more on what Lando actually said: ‘Aston are a bit ahead of us’
Which exasperated me to be honest
